[ Note: I created this page a year ago, but have since upped the $15m to $45m, although I have left the original text, and the original video, unchanged ]

----

I am a rural poor African.

I am asking humanity as a whole, to only risk a one-time $15m, by providing this money to me purely as a gamble, i.e., as an experiment, to see if a bottom-up approach to ending extreme poverty might be the ideal thing to do.

It's true, the idea of putting such a sum of money in the hands of a person like me conjures fears of what will actually become of it, and so, I am asking the world to help me raise this money, by accepting that this is all part of the experiment.

Because, unless we experiment, we will continue having a world where all existing approaches to ending global poverty are exclusively top-bottom, and inevitably short-lived.

Across history, humanity has left people like us on the sidelines of the global fight against poverty.

And today, only 1% of all the money that is intended to end global poverty, is what goes directly to the extreme poor in the global south.

The result?

In many of the truly impoverished remote rural areas of the world, like where I live, there is simply nothing that is happening to end extreme poverty. Entire communities are always dead silent; people are starving, with no trace of anything in place to end extreme poverty.

To complicate it all, the people from the global development sector, who keep the other 99% of global antipoverty funding, and who could have been the ultimate allies of people like us, are instead the same people who are very committed to engaging with the extreme poor only when rolling out their own predetermined solutions.

But their own solutions only reach a few random poor communities.

And, as one US writer says here, even in those few poor communities that are lucky enough to be reached, “these interventions disappear almost immediately after the departure" of their proponents.

It is why I am asking you to help me raise $45m purely as a gamble.

Because, unless we experiment, we will continue having a) a world where all existing solutions to ending global poverty are exclusively top-bottom, and largely short-lived, and b) a world where billions are spent every year, in the name of ending global poverty, in a way that doesn’t touch people like us in any way.

See what I intend to do with that $45m here.

About me:

My name is Anthony, a farmer here in Namisita, a village in a remote part of Kamuli, in eastern Uganda. My whole life has been defined by chronic extreme poverty, but whenever I look at the level of poverty in our region as a whole, something tells me I just must do something, in my remaining lifetime.

I am also founder of the UCF, a nonprofit social enterprise that aims to end extreme poverty.

  • 😇Come on kind angels! Donate to GRASS ROOTS fully accredited organizations. You can search to see that there are enough concrete examples, that show 9 out of 10 individuals or causes that are directly in charge of implementing any given funding, to lift themselves out of subsistence poverty, do so with great success. Even here in the wealthy country of Australia, our indigenous people's have had a gutful of patronising conservative govt management. Like forever! Especially now, as the numbers of highly qualified & experienced aboriginal professionals who know what & how to achieve the best most economic outcomes, are significant, compared to even a decade ago. They have a chance to win this fight to administer. In sub-sahara Africa, with huge funding aid cuts from such as the UK for one, Ugandan farmers, such as those Anthony is fighting for and especially in more remote regions such as theirs, need our grass roots support, as aid funding was dismal before the pandemic. Help plant the seed. 🌻
