I have written two successful novels while living in South Africa. Both novels are available in stores in South Africa as well as online. The problem is that neither of these sales avenues makes an author any real money unless they can be printed in large numbers – which obviously reduces the cost per book printing costs. After the first book was published by a small Cape Town publishing firm I acquired the firm and have published three more novels, including my second book. I have freelance editors, graphic designers and book designers who do the professional stuff to make these novels world class book.

But I have a problem that I am hoping you guys can help with: I don’t have the cash to print a big print-run of books and get a low print cost that will allow me to make enough profit from that print run to both live on, and have enough cash to keep future prints on a profitable basis.

Several of my readers have suggested the crowd funding route, so here I am giving it a try.

Basically, I need to be able to go to the printers and order, and pay for, a minimum of 500 copies of each novel, rather than the 20 to 30 that I am currently ordering. This would reduce the print costs by approximately 50% which will finally make it possible to live on the sales and keep the large print-runs going, not just for my novels but for the authors that I help get into print, which I do to help them rather than make any money from these local authors.

There is an extra advantage to being able to reduce the cost per copy: I often get orders for my books from all over the world – from UK, USA, to Moscow and Rio – and have to ship them from South Africa which is expensive and pushes up the cost to the readers. With a reduced print cost I can establish an agency for the books in Europe.
