Campaign Story
Good day and Kalimera,
We can all see the devastating effect Covid 19 is having on the world, Greece and in particular our little area of Apokoronas.
The bars and tavernas are empty, hotels are not opening, beaches are deserted. Even if, on 1st July some tourists appear, this summer season is going to be extremely short and quiet. Jobs are already at a premium and people’s earning capacity is almost at zero and in some cases has been since last October. Many local people have received either no financial assistance or just a minimal amount from the Government. This is not going to change.
Already some local people are on their knees financially. Cretans are a proud nation and I am lead to understand will try and barter for their needs going forward. However there is only so much bartering that can happen.
With the help and advice from our local friends we must acknowledge that this coming winter is going to become extremely challenging to some.
To this end we would like (very quietly and discreetly)to ask those that agree with these concerns to help. Our suggestion is to start a funding page via
Go get funding and its name is “Apokoronas Covid 19 crisis fund”
https://assets.gogetfunding.com/apokoronas-covid-19-crisi...
We would ask that if at all possible you could contribute a small amount regularly as we believe the most critical time will be December and January. The idea being that a list of very basic provisions - rice, pasta, tinned tomatoes, soap, sanitary wear, washing powder etc can be supplied monthly (by a responsible local person) to help those in most need during these very difficult times. These provisions will be bought as cheaply as possible, stored and when a vulnerable person or family is identified distributed by our local helpers.
We also hope to create a “war chest fund” to allow any other small, critical needs to be funded, for example, kids with holes in shoes, blankets, emergency house repairs etc.
We do appreciate that the social Supermarket at Nippos is fully operational and helps many families in distress, however we also know that some local people may well not be able to access this service as quickly as they may need.
We have found 3 local people who have an in depth understanding of the issues and they already work with the local community and schools to help identify those “under the radar” families in critical need. They are more than happy to help with this small venture. They will make the decisions on what is needed and are very appreciative of any help we can give them financially.
This is a social disaster in the making and are asking for your help financially. Any amount little or large will help someone this winter. If its only 5 euro then that will get a couple of packs of a staple food for someone.
PLEASE HELP!!! Any positive suggestions are very welcome!!

Closing of fund raiser
Update posted by Janet Thornhill at 12:58 pmFirstly can I say a massive thank you to all those generous people who have raised a total of £790. As those who are following this page will know, I am unfortunately having to return to the U.K. for personal reasons. I think the best way forward is for me. . . . .

I've had the good fortune to visit Crete a few times thanks to the hospitality of a friend who is now a resident. Giving something to this fund is the least I can do at present.
