Campaign Story
It is not an easy task for me to write this, but Katundo Leather is on the ropes and we are looking for support from family, friends, and anyone who appreciates fine handmade leather goods.
Due to the economic impact caused by the Coronavirus and Covid-19 the business that I have poured my passion, blood, sweat and tears into is endanger of closing forever. Additionally, fears about the virus and related travel restrictions have slowed our retail operations to a fraction of normal as well. All of our applications for Covid-19 relief have been turned down so far. It is with this in mind that we have decided to reach out for crowdfunding support
On top of this we were recently notified that the lease on location where we live and manufacture our leather goods will not be renewed. The owner of the property is facing similar issues with his own son’s business having recently failed and is moving onto the property. This domino effect of losing our home and workshop has now put us at risk of losing our retail shop at Perry's Bridge. Moving just one of the three entities would be a challenge in and of itself but dealing with all three is a near impossible ask. So we have made the decision to close the retail shop in Hazyview and looking into moving my operations to Hoedspruit, as it is a more touristy town and the town appreciates the craftsmanship of the local made products using 100% South African leather.
Most of the other retail operations actually import many of their leather products with most coming from China and India. These mass-produced products are nowhere near the quality of our leather products and many times not made from materials found in S. Africa. We use sustainable sources for our raw materials so that we have minimal impact on the local wildlife and are committed to the efforts underway to ensure that Africa’s world-famous wildlife not only survives but thrives.
Katundo Leather is a proud South African based company and we firmly believe supporting the local South African economy is key to getting business back on track.
Your support will help us weather this perfect storm of issues we face with the goal of getting production back up running as soon as possible. This will allow us to continue to support other South African businesses and locals who provide us with many of the raw goods and materials needed to produce the leather goods Katundo has become known for around the world.
