The Pearl Safe Haven is a NGO founded in 2018 with the core focus on building a safe haven for survivors of gender-based violence in Ghana. There are currently no operational safe houses in Ghana.
We started the construction in early 2019 after securing seed funding from the Australian High Commission’s Melbourne Cup Award and the land from the Agyepong family. We now have now completed the structural work for two floors, which we are now tiling, wiring and furnishing. The building is designed to have a third floor, which would enable us to increase our capacity to house up to 20 survivors (from the current 12).
In addition to building the safe haven, we received grant funding from the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, and have designed and are currently building a mobile application called “Safe Place” which will enable us to provide potentially life-saving information to users as well as track incidences of violence. The second phase of the app development will be to create a link to the police hotline so calls/notifications can be made directly through the app.
The realisation of our vision to date has been made possible by the kind support of our partners: our Patron (the Australian High Commission, Accra), our Premier Partner (Mohinani Group) and project partners: Diamond Cement, WAFOR, Nexans Kabelmetal (Gh) Ltd, JLD & MB Law, Geodrill, Stimuluz, Signum Developers, Silverbird Cinemas, TwinsDontBeg and Hannaba Farms Limited.
Today, 3rd December is "Giving Tuesday" - a global movement created in 2012 to encourage people to do good. With such need in the world, it is great to set aside a day to give, collaborate and celebrate generosity.
Make sure to find a cause you believe in and do something today! If you would like to support the work of the Pearl Safe Haven you can give online at https://gogetfunding.com/the-pearl-safe-haven/ or check for other donation methods on our website: www.thepearlsafehaven.org.

25th November will mark the start of the 16 day global campaign!!
Every year, the United Nations (UN) runs a global campaign over 16 days to advocate for an end to violence against women. There continues to be widespread impunity on sexual violence and rape, and, as a result, the UN Secretary-General, Mr António Guterres, has decided that the next two years the UNiTE Campaign will focus on a rape as a specific form of harm committed against women and girls, both in times of peace and war.
This year, the 16days commences on 25th November - the Day for the Elimination of violence against Women and ends on the International day of Human Rights, 10th December under the theme: “Generation Equality: Stands Against Rape”. Rape is a very specific physical form of violence against women and girls that is rooted in a complex set of patriarchal beliefs, power and control which become normalised if not confronted.
In recent years, the voices of survivors and activists have been heard through campaigns such as #MeToo and #BalanceTonPorc. In Ghana, the Pearl Safe Haven team has been vocal in our stand against gender-based violence, using the hashtags #NoSilence #NoShame and #LovedoesnotHit.
Support the campaign from Monday 25th November and follow us on @pearlsafehaven - you can share the images on your profiles and social media handles to stand in support of vulnerable women!
