Patience

Update posted by Kirt Russelle Peconada

As of August 31, 2018, Ken-ken has finally been scheduled for an MRI of both his lower limbs. We are still working to secure a schedule for his chest CT scan.

Patience, these days, is often hard to come by.

Ken-ken is admitted at the Children's Cancer Institute Ward in St. Camillus Room for boys together with at most four (4) other patients who are either new cases or undergoing chemo / radiotherapy. Around the clock, we are dreadfully aware of the effects of chemo / radiotherapy.

On the bed to our left is a teen suffering from rhabdomyosarcoma and when he was given doxorubicin, it only took a couple of hours before he started shivering like crazy and got feverish. He vomited a lot and he banged his head on his bed due to a severe headache. Doctors had to put on hold the chemo by then.

On the bed to our right is a 12-year-old kid suffering from pineal gland tumor who just started chemo. He is overly sensitive to noise and light and is often irritable. He also kept throwing up, often looking like black coffee grounds.

We also shared the room with an 11-year-old who suffered from brain tumor. He couldn't move or talk or eat at all and his family was all he had to keep on going. Doctors had to transfer him to isolation due to high fever when he finished chemo.

Seeing those other kids, we couldn't help but be scared and unsure of how Ken-ken will react to chemo. One things' for sure, though. His mood has already altered and we often need a bit more patience to deal with him once he throws a tantrum. We can't blame him. We don't really know how he feels or what he's thinking. He's scared, but he doesn't show it. He smiles, but his eyes are deep with thoughts of what will come.

We try to make him understand. Our doctors are as friendly as they can ever get.

But no matter how much we try to comfort him, his worries just gets passed on to us.

So for this day onward, we pray for PATIENCE and A LOT OF IT.

Patience for what is happening and for what is to come.
