Nyla earns bronze at 2017 Cadet Pan American Championships

Nyla wrestled her way to a bronze medal at the 2017 Cadet Pan American Championships.

Nyla competed in the 65kg weight class with a total of 5 other girls. Based on the number of girls entered, Nyla’s would begin the tournament in the quarter finals against Thamires Martins Machado of Brazil. Nyla won the match by a score of 7-4 advancing her to the semifinals.

Nyla’s semifinal match was vs. Vicky Estefania Cevillano Porozo of Ecuador. Although Nyla was trying to put together her offensive attack, it was not enough as Vicky was able to outscore Nyla 6-0. With the lost, it placed Nyla in the first bronze medal match where she would face Ximena Magali Bogado of Argentina.

During the bronze medal match, Ximena took a 3-0 lead heading into the end of the first period. With about 45 seconds left in the match, Nyla was able to take Ximena out of bounds on her back to score 4 important points. When the finale whistle blew, Nyla had won the match by a score of 6-3.

The competition was tough and although Nyla had hopes of being the Pan American Champion, she was able to earn a bronze medal as well as the invaluable experience gained in her first international tournament.
