Post-Op Dr. Visit Results

Update posted by Wendy Johansen

Hello Friends!

Friday we had the post-op visit with the surgeon and received the updated pathology results. The cancer tumor was 3.5cm and the surgeon confirmed that it was the right choice to have the mastectomy since that is the protocol when tumors are larger than 3 cm. They also found that there was a micro invasion (1 mm) that had become invasive (starting to spread) so we are so grateful that we found the cancer early! Instead of having only the DCIS as the diagnosis, the surgeon explained these results are equivalent to stage 2 breast cancer. However, no chemotherapy or radiation is necessary and she is CANCER FREE!!

After meeting with the surgeon there had been enough healing to allow the removal of her drain. Check out the photo below which shows the medical assistant with the drain and tubing. The amount of the tubing outside of her was about equal to what she had inside. We were very happy to have it removed so now her full recovery is underway!!

She's starting to get out more and is even planning to return to work on May 22nd for the last week of school.

We'll give another update after we have final pathology results on the tumor's hormone receptors status. She may need to see an oncologist and start anti-estrogen medication to help prevent cancer in the future.

Thanks to all of you again for your support and prayers! Your generous outpouring of love has been amazing!

Much love and gratitude,

Wendy
