Massive Flooding in Calgary

Update posted by CoriBowhay

Much of Calgary is underwater.

Tens of thousands of people have been evacuated from their homes.

Our community of Bowness has been one of the hardest hit areas of the city. Hundreds of homes have been destroyed by flood waters from the Bow River. While we were not in the evacuation zone, we made the decision to leave when the police were fliying overhead on Thursday evacuating the neighbourhood. The City advised that communities with evacuations would be without power. We decided that we should go for that reason alone.

Duffy, Mom and I have been couch surfing the last two nights. And it was not easy. Having to leave your home, not sure if flood waters could reach it AND having to take a dog recovering from surgery has been incredibly stressful on all of us.

We are very pleased to say that we are not back at home. Some wonderful friends drove their truck down (in case there was water anywhere) to check on our house. No water, and the power is on. So we have been able to come back home.

Duffy has been sleeping since we got home. I slept for 4 hours straight this afternoon after getting home. None of us had slept in 48 hours.

Our thanks goes out to everyone who has helped us, and our hearts go out to our neighbours who have lost their homes.
