Benjamin to SHMS – Swiss Hotel Management School

My name is Benjamin Hedlund, I come from Borås, Sweden. Currently I work as a bar manager in a popular restaurant chain in my hometown. We have five restaurants and three bars. I have been with the company since the second of our restaurants where opened. I have knowledge in service, beer, spirits and liqueurs, wine, coffee, stocktaking and managing staff. Before my current job I worked as a supervisor at the same workplace, and before that I worked on the floor. From the bottom to the top. I've studied mixology in Gothenburg. I love people, food and to please my guests. On my spare time I hang out with my friends and visit other country's. My network is global, I enjoy different cultures. Native language is Swedish, but I also speak fluent English. 

I am writing this because I need help to raise money for a bachelor of arts – hospitality management offered by SHMS Swiss Hotel Management School. My career objective is to work as a leader in either an reputable hotel or restaurant. I love the service business and I have already been working in the field for four years. To achieve this goal, I plan to attend a university in Europe, preferably in Switzerland, to earn a Bachelor of arts in international hospitality management. 

I received my high school degree at Bäckängskolan, Borås in 2011. In the summer of 2011, I attended a mixology course at IBS Academy Gothenberg in Sweden for the period of five weeks. The course helped me a lot with my current work. My five weeks at Sveriges Restaurang och Barskola - IBS Academy, teached me how to manage and operate a bar and restaurant service in general. I also gained the knowledge of different types of beverages including beer, wine, and spirits. I passed the final test with a higher grade. At the school I did meet interesting people from the restaurant business from all over Sweden including the general manager of Absolut Vodka and the Swedish representative of Bacardi Rum. The course have provided me four weeks of internship in addition to theoretical part. After completing my internship I got a job at the same company, where I worked for 8 months. I was responsible for keeping stock, daily routines check, nightclub bar-staff, drink list. From the last three years I have been working as a bar manager in a restaurant called Viskan AB, based in my hometown Borås. It is a challenging work in which I find stimulation and satisfaction. My job as a bar manager includes day to day service, managing staff as well as purchasing and inventory management. The years at Viskan did not just helped me to improve my knowledge in drinks and service but also my English as well as my understanding for other cultures and their way of working, due to a multicultural environment with staff from all around the world.

I want to improve my managing skills as well as the knowledge of business economics and how to lead and manage a large company to succeed in companies goals and growth. The courses and facilities SHMS school offering are very interesting for me in the following scenario. First, your rooms division management program will provide me with the information needed to work, lead and understand the business of a hotel more deeply. Secondly, SHMS school has a very good reputation for providing environment to learn, develop and flourish. The knowledge I will gain at SHMS will boost my career in new directions of hotel business. Lastly, SHMS classes are more effective with limited students numbers to encourage group discussion and provide students opportunity to one-to-one interaction with the teachers. I strongly believe that SHMS Swiss hotel management school is the ideal place for me to achieve my academic goals.
