Annie of the Antarctic

Update posted by Lianne Waterston On Apr 07, 2018

I made it to Antarctica and crossed the circle! A huge thanks to all of you and your generous donations towards my expedition. I really would have been struggling to make this happen if it had not been for the generosity and support I received from all of you. I hope that you managed to follow along with the expedition from my blog where I posted expedition updates:

www.ecoannie.blog

The plan now is to relay the knowledge that I learned about climate change, what is causing it, the Paris agreement, and more importantly solutions that everyone is capable of at some level, so that we can all be a little more informed and inspired about what we can do to move towards a healthier planet.

Global temperatures have been steadily increasing. 2016 was the hottest year on record and 2017 the hottest non El Niño year. Pre 1960 carbon dioxide levels in our atmosphere stood below 320 ppm (parts per million) and current levels are at 410 ppm. This is a huge increase compared to the fact that for the last 10,000 years the level of Carbon dioxide had stayed at a steady 275 ppm. These temperature rises and Carbon dioxide rises have been linked to the use of fossil fuels such as oil, coal and gas as well as Industry, livestock and agriculture. The vast increase in deforestation has also been a contributing factor to these rises.

Rob and Barney Swan's main focus of the 2041 campaign for the next 7 years is to remove 326 million tonnes of CO2 from the atmosphere and I hope you will all join them and me in making this happen. It is called the Climate force challenge.

I still have many stories and reports to post about the trip where I will go into the above in more detail and highlight effects of climate change and solutions. I will be doing this through more updates on my blog and through facebook.

Please get in touch with me if you would like to discuss anything about the expedition with me or want more information on a particular topic.

Once again - THANK YOU

Annie x

Hi everyone,

Just to let you know that the support has been ongoing and I have now reached £3000 towards my total. Which I am over the moon about. Below is an update of how I am trying to spread awareness.

I recently did a presentation about the expedition and the 2041 mission at Vientiane International school with students from the GIN club (Global Issues Network). They are hoping to join forces with "bamboo Lao" https://bamboolao.com/ and make Vientiane plastic straw free. It would be such an amazing achievement if they were part of this movement so I hope that I inspired them to really go for it.

Next week I am skyping with Year 4 students from Nagoya International School on the topic of "humans can have an impact on global warming". I will be talking about the expedition and the ways in which I have reduced my personal impact. In turn I hope this will inspire them to take on the Climate force challenge (CFC) - which is a 7 year mission to clean up 326 million tonnes of Carbon dioxide by 2025.

Please watch this video which stars some young people doing their bit to help the planet. Climate force challenge Share as much as you like with any schools or families who you think might like to take the Challenge. An online certificate will be sent showing that you are a Youth Climate force ambassador!

It is less than 30 days now until I will be heading off! It seems to have come so quickly. My fundraiser on the 17th February at Stewart's Melville rugby club is shaping up to be a good night. I have only 4 horses left to sell so get in touch if you want to be a horse owner (£15 with free entry) or just come along on the night to place a few bets! Big thank you to JB foods who will be sponsoring food which will be included in the entry price of £5. Hope to see many of you there.

Thank you all for your continued support.

Annie. x

Hi everyone,

Thank you for your continued to support towards my campaign. I feel so lucky to have such a vast network of family, friends and colleagues that believe in me and what I am trying to achieve. I am delighted to say that I have reached 20% of my total! (£2000) thanks to all of you.

I have been emailing proposals to different companies and have my fingers crossed that one of them will see the value and get onboard.

On February 17th, I will be holding a fundraiser at Stewart's Melville rugby club in Edinburgh. The main event will be a race night along with food, drink and a raffle. Please bring your family and friends and come along if you are nearby! Any proceeds I make over my target will be donated to Forever Angels baby home in Tanzania.

It is now 59 days before I set sail to Antarctica! It's getting very real now!

Merry xmas and a Happy new Year.

With love,

Annie x

Hi everyone, I have just updated my fundraiser page to include Rewards in return for your support. If you already donated to me before these rewards were added then please go to the page and choose your reward and email your choice to me.

Only 3 months to go before I set off! Could you please share my fundraiser page on social media and by any other means you can. It is much appreciated.

Robert Swan and his son Barney started their 600 mile trek to the South Pole today. They will walk the whole way surviving on only renewable energy to raise awareness surrounding climate change. You can follow their journey from this link: http://www.2041.com/spec-tracker/

Thank you.

Today, September 10th I received a donation which takes my total up to that magic number of 10. Thank you so much to these 10 for kickstarting my fundraising and I will be sure to pass on my gratitude with a small gift from Antarctica.

My new blog has been launched so please follow along and share with friends and family. I will be updating about how everyone can get involved with making small changes towards a cleaner and better future.
