Agape Hope Center for Children is an orphanage and educational center for youth in the Dagoretti District of Nairobi, Kenya. Founded and directed by Oliver Chiraba and Margaret Kimaiyo, Agape houses, feeds, clothes, and educates orphaned and vulnerable children (OVCs) who reside at the center and in the surrounding community. The main goals of Agape are to care for the children’s medical, physical, emotional, and spiritual welfare; to facilitate each child’s growth; to help each child reach his or her full potential; to teach them to responsibly care for themselves; and to promote Christian values (see also www.agapehopecenter.org). Agape and members of this fundraiser welcome people of all faiths and backgrounds to participate in fostering the well-being of the children.

Agape Hope Center for Children aims to be self-sustainable and to teach its children to be self-sufficient. To this end, Agape cares for a small number of farm animals, sells milk and eggs to raise funds for themselves, and cultivates a greenhouse garden for vegetables.

Children are expected to fulfill basic responsibilities such as making their beds, washing their clothes, and preparing food. They attend spiritual services on Sundays. The directors attempt to provide fulfilling and stimulating activities such as dance, music, and games, and assist adolescents in launching their career or vocational interests and finding employment. Agape also cares for companion animals including dogs and cats. At least one teacher resides in the orphanage and helps to prepare meals and teach games in addition to educating children in the classroom. Agape also accepts volunteers to help care for the children, who number approximately 100 on site and up to 500 on campus and in the community combined.

At present, Agape’s school building houses classrooms for children through eighth grade. There is a great need for a secondary school on the premises due to the increasing numbers of adolescent students on campus and in the adjacent neighborhoods. Agape derives some of the funds for its children from tuition paid by local families and as such would benefit from a formal secondary school building to accommodate more students and generate more income.

Agape Hope Center for Children operates through the kindness and generosity of donors. Serving Orphans Worldwide (SOW), based in the United States, has also dedicated its resources to help the youth of Agape (see also www.soworldwide.org). Funds raised through this website will be transferred to Serving Orphans Worldwide and on to Agape Hope Center for children. The goal is to raise $10,000.00 U.S. dollars to cover the cost of Agape’s secondary school building and supplies. *
