Hi! My name is Darnell Kennedy and after accumulating over 8000 volunteer hours in my hometown of Ottawa, Ontario - I've decided to travel over 24,000 Km to volunteer in Eastern Africa for 6 weeks! In order to get there though, I need your help and I would love for you to read below, about my trip!
Who will I be going with?
A great Canadian organization called Operation Groundswell! The organization was founded on the principle that they were going to be different. Unlike most travel volunteer organizations, ethical travel is at the crux of the organization’s philosophy. They do not provide guided tours or vacations. Their trips are intentionally designed to uncover the intricacies and on-the-ground realities of each region we, as volunteers, go to. The volunteers eat local food, use local transport, and survive each day as a temporary local. We do not go into a community with the expectation of being saviors and solving all problems. For six-weeks we are members of the community and as members, we have a duty to serve and contribute.
Unlike many large Western organizations that create strategic development plans and enforce them throughout the developing world, Operation Groundswell seeks partnerships with local NGOs and charities and works with them on community-requested projects.
Don't you create a large carbon footprint by travelling so much?
Round-trip flights and in-country transportation leaves a large carbon footprint. They realize that climate change is a very real threat and is already having drastic effects on communities they work with. For this reason, OG decided to carbon offset flights for all of our programs. Operation Groundswell are partners with PlanetAir, a Canadian organization that offers Gold Standard offsets, adhering to the most widely accepted quality seal for voluntary offsets currently available.
What will I be doing in Africa?
I will have the amazing opportunity to Volunteer in Maragoli, a village in Western Kenya that has seen the best and worst of development, and where I will learn to look at aid in Africa through a whole new lens.
  • Visit Kibera, East Africa’s most populous slum, and work with internationally recognized artist and peace activist Solo7. Take a different kind of safari by bicycling through Hells Gate National Park marveling at giraffes, zebras and wildebeest. Learn about the realities of the genocide in the misty hills of Rwanda. White-water raft the mighty rapids at the source of the Nile in Uganda.
  • The nature of the projects that we'll be doing depends on the requests of our community partners. Some examples of projects they have done in partnership with the people of Maragoli are: constructing a local bridge, building latrines for a technical school, working at a resource center, and running an intercultural women’s political group. We work with the needs of the locals in determining the projects through a community meeting called a baraza.
  • Why Africa?
Kenya often evokes mental images of Masai Mara warriors, exotic wildlife in national parks and acacia trees on the savannah. These images still ring true today, but there is so much more to Kenya than going on a safari.
red-brown dirt roads and aqua blue waters of rivers and lakes. Kigali, especially, is a hip metropolis booming from a successful telecommunications industry.
It only takes a moment to realize that these countries can’t be summed up in a few lines. The lessons I have the chance to learn about would take a lifetime to write. Hopefully though, I will find these truths for myself.
    Where is my money going?
Here is a rundown of exactly where the $6500 will be going:
    Program Fee - $2650 - 85% in country projects - 10% Carbon off-setting - 5% Admin
Donation to an East African NGO - $1000 - To be decided in country
    Flight - $1500
Shots - $500 - Mandatory to enter the countries

In order to achieve my goal of getting to Africa, I need to raise $6500 in exactly 95 days from now when I hop on a plane to Nairobi on May 27th!
