Achmat, 3 x paralympian, and a bronze medalist, underwent a routine back surgery. Post-op complications has resulted in him being in a coma on life support in the ICU. He is going to need plenty of medical interventions if he is to make a full recovery
He fought off a great white shark to save his younger brother, so we can fight for his life now too.a

Achmat is settling in at home nicely.We have an increasing respect and admiration for nursing and carers. It is not easy! We are learning as we go and it's a bit of trial and error as we are fully relying on volunteers at the moment to teach us and assist. . . . .
6 month update
Update posted by Taryn Ganger at 12:26 pmAchmat is physically stable, though not conscious. The doctors have said that his brain has undergone too much damage so he won't be coming back to us. The condition he is currently in, is the condition he is staying in. There is not much more they can do for him. . . . .
Cost Update

This includes the doctor's visits, physio, speech therapist, medication and all other tests and procedures they've had to do so far. This works out to approximately R20 000 per
We've left the hospital!

He has fought off recurring infections to get to this point, so we are incredibly proud of him for his fighting spirit.He has been moved to the rehabilitation facility, and we are extremely happy to. . . . .
Some good news
Update posted by Taryn Ganger at 01:41 pmToday marks 1 whole month since Achmat was first admitted to hospital.He has managed to fight off the infections that were most worrisome to the doctors. He is finally off the ventilator and breathing on his own.He has been seen by a neurologist, physio, and speech therapist in addition to. . . . .
