Abate (which translates into "Slaughter") is a short film about Isabel, a middleclass, 22 years old girl who lives in the city of Rio de Janeiro apparently cold and distrustful of others. During a dinner, she is shocked: Her parents sold to a construction company her grandfather's farm who died over 10 years before. She spends the night awake, memories of her grandfather and the farm flood her mind. She takes her mother's car and drives through daw reaching the mountainous countryside of Rio where the abandoned farm is. There, the first thing she goes for is a hunting rifle which her grandpa taught her how to shoot with.
Its inspiration is extremely personal but I'm sure it is not unusual. My grandmother began having issues with her memories and lately it has been extremely hard meeting her. At first memories would not stick, but now only distant memories are alive. She is losing the identity I knew her for and is becoming a vessel for a person who existed, with a small but irreparable crack. It's slow but unstoppable. Relentless isn't an exaggeration. I eventually felt the same way later on when the city I live in gave me the very same feeling: its rigid, aggressive and unforgivable stance had regarded people as less than human. I could finally say that I felt uncapable to confront them. Realizing it put me into writing a fantasy where a hero did something about it.
I do have the support of my crew, friends and family and it sure depends on all the colective effort we did and will but money is an issue. It's a short but there are people to feed, equipment to rent, things to transport and time to consume. Contributing isn't only helping the film, it helps the development of the whole crew, young talents about to gradute, willing to do something ambitious like Abate.
Besides the joy of trusting and helping the project, there are rewards! I truly believe on small donations, by donating any amount you are showing interest and others will follow. Even just sharing it around with friends and family helps a ton! But I haven't lost faith, big contributors are well rewarded.
It will be spoken in Portuguese but it will be released with English and Spanish subs. If it gets tons of support from other regions I will make my best effort to sub it on local languages.
