A Ray of Hope for Dr. Behram, Lejla – ENHERTU® Fundraising Campaign

Friends, family, and compassionate souls, we come to you with a humble plea for support in the fight against breast cancer for a strong, brave, and dedicated woman, Dr. Lejla Behram (Pediatrician), as a devoted doctor herself, Lejla has spent her entire life helping children overcome hard times and illness. Now, Lejla faces her own battle with Breast cancer that needs our help to access a potentially life-saving treatment called ENHERTU®.

Background:

Four years ago, Lejla was diagnosed with breast cancer HER2 +, and after an arduous journey, she achieved remission. Throughout her life, Lejla has demonstrated her commitment to healing and caring for others. Her dedication to her patients, even while facing her own health challenges, has inspired countless people and made a significant impact in their lives.

The Challenge:

Unfortunately, about six months ago, Lejla's cancer metastasized, spreading to the liver and lungs. Despite the odds, Lejla has been responding well to the smart chemotherapy, PERJETA® (pertuzumab) + Herceptin (Trastuzumab) which have successfully shrunk the cancer in the liver and lungs.

However, the current chemo protocols have their own limitations - it does not effectively target the cancer cells that have now spread to the brain and the prescription medication is not able to cross the blood brain barrier. After consulting with oncologists from the USA, India and Turkey the recommended solution was reached that the new smart drug ENHERTU® (fam-trastuzumab - deruxtecan-nxki) is the right and the only choice for the current situation.

ENHERTU®, on May 4, 2022 has been approved by the FDA and is the only drug that can cross the blood brain barrier to combat the now metastasized cancer cells. In the last 12 months during clinical trials, ENHERTU® has shown excellent results in fighting with HER 2 + type of cancer metastasis.

The Roadblock:

Sadly, ENHERTU® is not yet available in Bosnia, and obtaining it poses several logistical and financial challenges. The drug requires prescriptions, and its strict temperature tolerance makes transportation difficult. Furthermore, the cost for a cycle/round (21 days) of ENHERTU® varies significantly depending on the location:

Price per 100mg vial: Each Treatment (every 21 days) requires 4 vials

• $4.5k in the US
• €2.5k - 4.5K in Germany
• €1.8k in Croatia (the nearest country where it is available and the cheapest solution)
