“Women for Justice and Peace in South Africa”.
"We cannot and should not allow these stories and legacies to
fade into the past. So, this is a friendly invitation to get involved
and become a co-producer of this film by making a financial contribution
to our crowdfunding campaign."
Every contribution pushes us one step forward. I am well aware of the fact that it is the $10 and R50 that add up in the end to a large amount. So please be assure, we are very grateful for every donation.
This is the pilot episode of 40 minutes, titled “Women for Justice and Peace in South Africa”. The film is about Mary Ingouville Burton who was born in Argentina and came to South Africa in 1961, at the age of 21, to marry Geoff Burton. Geoff’s family was part of the well-off white conservative English establishment of the southern suburbs of Cape Town.
Typically of Mary, she was not just a
spectator when she arrived in her new country. She already decided that
the policies of the Nationalist government were offensive to her and she
was determined to contribute towards the dismantling of apartheid and
righting its wrongs.
She made it her business to cultivate a network of like-minded individuals and before long she joined the Black Sash. Their manner of protest was uniquely effective but required great courage and resolve.
Mary as a brave and increasingly respected leader was involved in several events, including her arrest in 1985 after the attempted march to Pollsmoor prison where Nelson Mandela was being held. She was the leader of the Black Sash from 1985 to 1990. In 1995 Mary was appointed by the newly elected president of a democratic South Africa, Mr Nelson Mandela to serve as a commissioner on the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.
My name is Deon Kitching and I am a born and bred in South Africa.
Currently I am working on this
short documentary series called: “Justice and Reconciliation in South
Africa. Voices from the past”. This is the pilot episode, “Women for
Justice and Peace in South Africa”, about the life and work of Mary G
Burton.
