South Africa is facing an unprecedented emergency, unlike anything this country has experienced. Beyond the health impacts of COVID-19, the economy has ground to a halt. Traditional safety nets like school feeding programs, childcare services, orphanages, and senior centres are struggling to stay open. Millions of South Africans are now out of work and struggling to put food on the table for their families.

Our organisation

Community Initiative for Social Enhancement is a non-profit making non-governmental organization formed in June 2010 registered in terms the Non-Profit Act, 1997 (Act 71 of 1997). The organisation exists to provide care and support to vulnerable communities especially women, children and elderly

People's needs urgent food and PPE supplies for the Front liners who are working in overcrowded informal settlements and townships. Your support will help the most vulnerable people receive the meals they need during these uncertain times. The organisation will provide food parcels to communities in Evaton, Cosmo City and Zandspruit informal settlement situated in the Joahannesburg west. Most of the informal settlements in South Africa are the Victims of COVID-19, millions affected due to food shortage, we therefore want to support vulnerable groups at their door step by providing them with emergency food during the LOCK DOWN to complement with the Government efforts and other key players.

Another target area to receive the food support and PPEs is Evaton. In Evaton, 36% of households surveyed rely on social grants as their main source of income. Only 47% of households depend primarily on wages and 10% rely on income from business activities. Most households (72% of those surveyed) survive on less than R1000 per month and another 24.8% of households had an income of between R1000 and R3500. Only 4.1% of households had a monthly income exceeding R3500.

Food security is a major problem in Evaton. SPII found that 23% of households lack sufficient food. The bulk of Evatonians (72%) had “just adequate” access to food sufficient but lacking in nutritional value. The lockdown has made it worse, people are spending a week without any proper meal.

Our aim is to make sure that vulnerable people have food ration for 18 days package during this emergency and about 2,000 families will receive uncooked food items during this emergency shutdown due to epidemic COVID-19.

This is the time to respond quickly to support them with food and ration for them during the lockdown period.

Long-Term Impact

At present it is impossible to know what the long-term needs will be, as circumstances change daily and resources for marginalised communities become more scarce. We are committed to developing long-term, sustainable support for our community partners through this crisis. At present, meeting survival needs will enable safety and health. In the long-term, we want to support communities back into education and dignified livelihoods. In what will be a changed landscape, this emergency response is essential.
