My name is Jenny, and I am a Psychology student at the University of Southampton. I have the opportunity to travel to Sri Lanka to volunteer in the mental health sector in the summer with 'Plan My Gap Year'.
In tsunami affected areas, 40% of people suffer from a mental disorder, and according to the World Health Organisation Sri Lanka's suicide rates are amongst the highest in the world. This programme is based in the Galle District - one of the worst areas affected by the 2004 Boxing Days Tsunami whose impact can still be felt today.
Medical officers of mental health are at a ratio of one per 70,000 civilians, leading to excessive workloads and a reduction in the quality of care that could be given to patients. As a volunteer I will shadow mental health doctors, aid them in their day to day duties, and support the occupational therapy programmes at local hospitals.
I will also have the opportunity to care for mentally disabled children in local schools to help support creative therapy.
I am hoping to raise £1000. All funds will be used to cover the costs of the programme fees.
I am extremely excited to be able to be a part of an essential framework for improving mental health, and grateful for a life-changing opportunity. Any donations would be appreciated.
Thank you !
