What is a stem cell? 

A stem cell is a cell whose main function is to repair lost or damaged cells in all areas of the body. Stem cells are found throughout our bodies, constantly replacing lost or damaged cells of various types. A stem cell is basically a “blank” cell—it has no specific function, and a stem cell can morph into any other type of cell when necessary. Stem cells can divide and repair within the body without end, provided there isn’t a glitch in the system.

Each time a stem cell multiplies, the new cell formed will either take the form of a specific tissue somewhere else in the body or carry on as a stem cell. There are three types of stem cells: totipotent, multipotent, and pluripotent. A fertilized egg is a totipotent stem cell, and this stem cell is the building block of all other cells in the body. A multipotent stem cell is a stem cell that can be used to create several different types of cells within the body, and a pluripotent stem cell can be used to create any type of cell—except embryonic cells.
