SANTA ANA – Detectives are asking for help in identifying a man who put an 83-year-old man in the hospital in a seemingly unprovoked attack Friday morning, authorities said.

UPDATE: Man arrested in attack that left 83-year-old critically injured

The man parked his vehicle at 6:10 a.m. at a strip mall in the 5000 block of West Edinger Avenue to go have coffee and read his newspaper, Santa Ana police Cpl. Anthony Bertagna said. The victim then got out of his car when the other man approached him.

Video surveillance shows a man punching and kicking the victim, and knocking him to the ground. The man was taken to a hospital with unknown injuries. Nothing was taken from the victim.

The suspect is described as a man standing 5 foot 10 inches tall, about 40 to 50 years old and weighing about 160 pounds. He was wearing a gray, long-sleeve shirt or black sweater. He was unshaven.
