Voluntary charity project to improve Education & lives

What am I raising money for?

Over the summer holidays I am travelling back to the village of Jandira in Uganda to volunteer with an on-going project to help improve education and the lives of many Ugandan young people and adults. Also, For the final week of the trip, I am travelling up to North Africa to Congo to visit the small village of Gulu. For this week, we will be working alongside child soldiers and families who have been affected by the war.  

What work has previously been carried out?

Over the past 9 years, as a team, we have made an incredible difference in Jandira. We have built 'source of light' primary school, 'light for all' feeder secondary school, as well as building accomodation blocks for teachers to live in and boarding houses for the children who previously had no nome or family. This has opened many doors and avenues for the 100s Of young children in Jandira who before 2006, did not have the option of education available to them. Each school has now over 300 pupils enrolled, and with the ongoing support of our charity, It has been possible for every child in the past 5 years to receive funding to sit their examinations at the end of each year.  Due to this many have now progressed to University to study to become doctors, teachers and engineers. In addition to building projects, we work alongside the schools helping to improve education and learning to give young people the best possible chance of having a successful future. 

What difference has this project made over the past 9 years? 

All of The young people of Jandira now have the opportunity of receiving an education which will help them in later life to achieve their full potential. Previously only the 'privileged' children of Jandira could afford to attend school, but now with our project and continuous fundraising throughout the year, each child can be funded a school place if they wish to attend. In addition, the building projects have generated many jobs for the Ugandan people - both labour work and education jobs within the schools, as well as safe places to live for both teachers and children.    

Why should you get involved?

Any money donated will go towards building resources for our new project this summer. In addition to this it will help to provide better and improved resources to be bought for the schools and to enable the school to enroll more young people, provide them with funding to sit their final examinations and to provide them with a free school meal once every day. The cost of the trip is incredibly expensive and although I am paying the majority cost myself, I have set a target of £600 to raise to help contribute to the team and the resources needed for this years project to be as successful as it can be.
