There is an urgent need for your help.
This is about a respected academician, my dear friend, university colleague, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Melek Atabey. As many of you know, Melek has been very courageously and effectively saving, curing, and finding homes for many stray cats and dogs in İzmir, Turkey.
Sadly, this admirable effort of hers can not continue any more. I am not going to go through the details, some of which are personal to her. The point is that Melek has fought very hard for a very long time to keep these animals in a safe and sustainable environment, and now this depends upon us.
Please go through your contacts and get in touch with anyone who may be able to help - individuals, shelters and animal welfare groups - with regard to the following:
Help can take the form of donation. Right now Melek has a huge debt due to the animals she has been giving love and care. Please bear in mind that even a small contribution makes a huge difference.
Help can take the form of adopting a cat or a dog, all of whom are healthy and meet all veterinary requirements. Please bear in mind that even if one person can adopt one animal, this will make a huge difference.
3. Temporary accommodation
Help can also take the form of temporary accommodation of cats and dogs mentioned above. Please bear in mind that even if one person or organization can keep one or more animals for a short period this will give Melek extremely valuable time.
4. Place to rent
Melek is currently left with no other option but to move to a new place - and you all know how difficult landlords can be about animals. Any information about anyone renting a house with a garden in İzmir, Turkey will be much appreciated.
Last but not least: We have all taken care of/found homes for strays, and often came across such calls for help. But this is not such an ordinary call! What we can come up with will determine not only the fate of these animals, but also the fate of Melek herself.
To her credit, Melek is determined to keep all her cats and dogs, which are disabled or ill. Please let's help her find homes/temporary accommodation for the lucky ones.
