Reclaiming Public Spaces in Sisian and Goris, Armenia: Turning the Challenge to an Opportunity

THE INITIATIVE

The Urban Foundation for Sustainable Development (the Urban Foundation) has been supporting 9 communities of Vayots Dzor and Syunik since 2016 now in the improvement of their solid waste management services with the financial support from the EU (Euro 1.000.000), national co-funding (Euro 127,500) and implementers’ own contribution (around Euro 150,000). As a part of this initiative, for the first time in Armenia, the Urban Foundation introduced an innovative, environmentally friendly technology using plastic waste and sand mixture for producing construction materials. A startup was established in Kapan which now produces 6 kinds of construction materials of decent quality. DEMONSTRATION SITES

The Urban Foundation is planning to use the first batches of construction materials produced with polymer-sand mixture technology for improving public spaces – parks, squares, playgrounds – as demonstration sites in those municipalities that are supplying plastic waste to the startup. Public spaces improved in such a way will foster environmental awareness of people, bring about behavior change and demonstrate to people that added value can be obtained from waste.

For this goal, the Urban Foundation is currently raising funds (around Euro 30,000) to supplement its aforementioned investment aiming to conduct improvement works using tiles, road curbs or fences made of the polymer-sand mixture in target communities.
