Toby Is Stronger

Toby was diagnosed with B-Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia, High-Risk Category, on September 08, 2016, when he was just 2 years old. Toby underwent chemotherapy soon after diagnosis. Just less than 1 month since chemo was started, his left foot developed phlebitis, in which extravasation of the IV fluid with dextrose in the surrounding tissue was suspected. A bacteria called Klebsiella infected his foot and traveled up to his leg despite broad-spectrum antibiotics.

Toby had to undergo continuous operations in his left leg to debride the necrotic tissue. This resulted in 5 months in and out of the Operating Room. After the leg was cleared of necrotic tissue, Toby was sent home and was cleared to continue to receive chemotherapy outpatient.

This incident resulted in a possibly life-long disability in his foot. HIs left foot and knee have a contracture and he could no longer walk flat but tip-toed and the right leg had to compensate.

Toby completed 3 years of chemotherapy in December 2019. He suffered infections like Pneumonia and bronchitis especially during the first year in 2017.

Just 3 months off chemotherapy, Toby developed a mass in his L Testis in March 2020. Toby had to undergo surgery to remove the mass in May 2020. A few months after, in August 2020, a bone marrow relapse was confirmed.

Toby had to undergo chemotherapy once again but with a different protocol. It was observed that he developed an intolerance to drugs. He experienced more adverse effects and side effects this time around.

In May 2021, 2 months short of a year of chemotherapy with the new protocol, Toby was deemed unresponsive to chemo with a WBC that spiked up to 92.3 during treatment.

Toby's doctor had to break the news to the family that he is no longer responding to the treatments and offered the options: Palliative Care and Bone Marrow Transplant.

It was a very difficult decision to make for the family. After making Toby understand the situation, Toby verbalized that he is not yet ready to meet with Our Creator yet. He still wants to fight!

The family decided to push through with a Bone Marrow Transplant despite having 3 relapses, which lowers his chance of survival. The family decided to give Toby a fighting chance.

In June 2021, a bone marrow relapse was confirmed. He is now 7 years old. Toby was then endorsed to the Bone Marrow Transplant Team in St. Luke's Medical Center. 5 years of chemotherapy didn't work, maybe a Bone Marrow Transplant can!

We honestly don't know what will happen in the days to come. How much time he has left. All we know is that we are doing all this, doing everything that we can, to give our son a fighting chance to live. We love you, son!
