OUR MISSION IS TO FIGHT POVERTY BY EMPOWERING CHILDREN WITH EDUCATION.
Tanzania Great Minds (TGM) is a registered non-profit organization, who has partnered with Tanzania Volunteer Experience (TVE) to provide a safe education to children living in poverty in Arusha, Tanzania, with support from international volunteers.
TGM was founded in September 2018, starting with 5 children from local families. Due to the overwhelming response from the community, TGM then moved to its current location in Sanawari where we now cater to more than thirty students. Due to the size of the current facility, there is a government cap of 35 students; however, there is a foreseen need within the community that many more families would benefit from the TGM service.
At TGM, we provide daycare services for children aged 2-5 years old from local families who could not otherwise afford schooling. The daycare service is provided 5 days per week and includes two meals for each student per day, also providing early childhood education with a focus on English, mathematics and phonics. The cost per child at TGM is approximately $5/month, compared to the $30/month costs at comparable private daycares. However, even with the lower cost, only 11 of our 31 families can currently afford to pay. Consequently, TGM is heavily reliant on the support of donors, volunteers, and its staff (which consists of one full-time qualified teacher, one cook and a school Director) to close the gap.
The ultimate goal is to become self-sufficient and run a larger facility in a safe location so we can cater to the needs of more families. In order to do so, we must purchase new land so we can have more classrooms and toilets, as well as a garden for food and space for the children to play. The cost for this new land is approximately $15,000 USD and will help pave the path toward a better future for the community.
