Thyroidectomy for a family breadwinner of 3

Update posted by Verge Gamotan On Dec 07, 2017

Recovering after a thyroid surgery.

Dec 5, Tuesday at 6PM I was discharged from the hospital; it was a 3 day stay full of memories, learning and life realization. I received overflowing support from family, friends and the online community.

Right after the surgery, I need time to recover and should be able ro return to my usual activities - following some routines to speed up my recovery process. I have a bit slight change and hoarse voice due to the damage to the laryngeal nerves during surgical intubulation that should last only a few days. I am taking calcium supplements for 2 weeks as I may have low blood calcium levels due to the damage to the parathyroid glands.

Incision size is about 4 inches and noticed slight swelling around the scar which is totally normal. I am set for another visit after 7 days to remove the sutures.

Now I am awaiting for the biopsy result of my gland as this will the basis on how should I progress with treatment. Should the extend be of higher risk then I need to undergo RadioActive Iodine Treatment (I131) - hopefully not. Again, I am asking for additional support and prayers for full recovery.

I can't thank enough the ENT Team at Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center who cared so much and was so passionate on their chosen path. Your legacy will be cherished and always be remembered.

Let’s keep praying, and I thank you so much for continued support.

I was taken from the ENT Ward 3D down to OR at 5am prepping for the surgery while meeting with my ENT, Surgeon and Anesthesiologist on an overview of the procedure. I was on a general anesthesia while doing the procedure for almost 5 hours, from 8AM til 1PM. It was a total thyroidectomy, meaning my whole thyroid gland of about 8cm in length was removed together with the 5cm node at the isthmus.

After surgery, I was moved to the recovery room for about 4 hours and still feeling the effect of Ketamine and other anesthesia. My voice is still hoarse due to the intubation procedure. Have a bit of difficulty drinking water and eating just yet but hopefully will be fine tomorrow. I haven't seen the cut yet. I had an initial talk with my surgeon requesting a summary of the procedure and after care and awaiting biopsy report of the specimen taken out.

I am now back at the ENT Ward 3D, sharing space with other 11 patients. No worries as the area is clean, well lighted and air-conditioned.
Nurses frequently visits to monitor stats and have been given 2 600g Calcium supplements.

This is it, surviving, breathing and continuing to fight. Together we may continue to pray for fast healing and recovery.
