Campaign Story
60% of Africa's population is in rural areas with 85% of them depending on Agriculture. Farmers depend on rain feed agriculture and when the rains fail as often happens or it is too much, the result is crop failure and then hunger. The poverty levels in rural areas are very high and RADEF (www.ruralagribiz.org) aims to break the cycle.
We have introduced poultry farming as means of ensuring year round stable income for farmers. Poultry will provide farmers with income from sale of poultry for meat and eggs, the resultant income will improve their livelihoods.
We give farmers disease resistant fast maturing free rage chicks for rearing. Each farmer undergoes intensive on-farm training on poultry keeping, they then receive 100 free range chicks that are one-day old, vaccines, feeds and supplements. On maturity (4 months) the farmers will sell the chicken for meat and keep some for egg production, then re-stock with new chicks. This ensures that farmers have a stable income through-out the year that is not dependent on rain.
