BABA CHAMS

A DOCUMENTARY PROJECT OF WALID FALLEH

Project Presentation

My documentary project is about Chamseddine Marzoug, a Tunisian fisherman from my city Zarzis, a border town with Libya, who fights daily for the remains of migrants who died at sea to be buried with dignity and for those who are still alive to be welcomed.

This fisherman has transformed the old landfill of his city into a "Cemetery of strangers". Ironically, Chamseddine's own family left the country in a makeshift boat to reach Europe. Today he finds himself alone in an emotional mess where he chose to stay to accomplish his mission and not to join his family.

Chamseddine told me that during his career as a fisherman, he came across dozens of boats overloaded with migrants trying to get to the other side of the Mediterranean Sea. “You cannot see migrants who need help and pass without doing anything. You have to save a human being at sea, it's the law of fishermen," Said Chamseddine .

He also explained to me that the fisherman take a lot of risks in rescuing them, because the migrants are in panic or because rescuing them is illegal. Indeed, these rescues at sea can lead to legal proceedings for their perpetrators.

It was fishing that plunged Chamseddine into the world of migration. Sometimes fisherman have to leave work to rescue drifting boats. A certain reciprocity exists when the migrants assist the fishermen and share with them their stories and their dreams but also their illusions and their disappointed hopes. Through these encounters, Chamseddine acquired knowledge of the phenomenon of migration.

One day, Chamseddine invited me to show me the "Cemetery of strangers" he erected in place of an old city dump. There, Chamseddine said to me: "These migrants, they no longer have family ... Right now, I am their family".

I was moved by Chamseddine's words and action, so I came up with the idea of making a documentary which would shed light on the powerful work that this daily "hero" does and how it can inspire us all.

Dear Friends,

The documentary has progressed well but I still have a few steps to get the job done.

My Goal It's to collect 2800 Euro to finish the shooting of the documentary, and the post production.

Please make a donation or share the links with your family and friends.

THANKS
