According to reports from the National Health Portal and World Health Organisation, India is the Thalassemia capital of the world with about 50 million carriers. About 15,000 babies are born with thalassemia major every year in India.
One such child is 2-year-old Mahesh who suffers from thalassemia major, a rare blood disorder where the body doesn’t produce enough oxygen-producing proteins.
“It has become a part of his life now. Whenever the nurse takes him inside the ward, he cries uncontrollably. It breaks my heart to hear his loud cries and not being able to do anything,” Shalu, Mahesh
