She's my classmate from highschool year 2003-2017. We grew up in the same hometown in Cebu. We came from different elementary schools but we met before the start of highschool due to the scholarship from the municipal government that we were applying. Both of us passed the scholarship.

I've known from her that they could not afford their daily lives. So she said she must work hard to gain a degree in college. She's intelligent, shy, very behaved and family oriented person. One time I even asked her to go with other classmates to the park before we go home but she refused because she still had to help her mother doing the chores at home. As a teenager, boyfriend-girlfriend relationship starts but she never entered for she wanted to prioritize her family and that she could finish college.

In 2013,with all her determination, I knew from a post that she graduated in college with a degree of Bachelor in Secondary Education. She passed the licensure exam. While waiting for an item to get to work as a secondary teacher, she was working as English as Secondary Language (ESL). In year 2016, she finally got an item to teach in the nearby town from ours. Unfortunately, just a few weeks of her service, things were startingv to show up. She got fainted at school, felt numb on some part of her body-at first were hands, then it got worse until the first quarter of 2017, the lower part of her body got paralyzed.

She was diagnosed with Syringomyelia, a rare disease in the spinal cord that could numb, paralyzed or even kill a person. Due to poverty, the family cannot afford her to send to therapists or doctors for proper treatment.

She is Ma. Theresa Bacalso. She was supposed to be the breadwinner of their family. But odds are against her. She's been sick for a long time now, that she is a bed-ridden already. Her mother takes care of her, stressed out on how to support the family and how to support the special needs of Theresa.

I would like to ask to those people who have the hearts to help my friend. Any amount will do. In collaboration with my batch mates in highschool, we would to ask your kindness to provide the immediate needs of a wasted good friend of us.

What is Syringomyelia?

Syringomyelia is a rare disorder in which a fluid-filled cyst forms within your spinal cord. This cyst is referred to as a syrinx.

As the syrinx expands and lengthens over time, it compresses and damages part of your spinal cord from its center outward.

Damage to the spinal cord caused by a syrinx can lead to symptoms such as progressive pain, stiffness, and weakness in the:

  • back
  • shoulders
  • arms
  • legs

People with the disorder might lose the ability to feel cold and pain normally. Some people with this disorder won’t have any symptoms and won’t need treatment. For others, syringomyelia will cause symptoms and complications that worsen as the syrinx expands.

Treatment aims to relieve the pressure on your spinal cord. The treatment your doctor suggests for you will depend on the cause of your syringomyelia. Follow-up care after surgery is important because syringomyelia can reoccur.

Her latest update now is that she is now paralyzed and with an oxygen support. She has a poor family and they cannot afford a Therapist. That’s why she was not cured and her condition got worsened.

Let us help her recover on her condition and to be able to support her family.

  • She was a colleague from my previous company. I think she’s a really nice and smart woman. Praying for her recovery.
