Survivors With Biros

Update posted by Anna Morvern On Jul 10, 2018

Please check out our Summer 2018 Fundraiser: August Bank Holiday weekend in Sligo: a sponsored 5k on 4 August and Potluck Picnic in Knocknarea Arena, IT Sligo, on 5 August, 5 EUR (bring food/drink). Do come along and spread the word, please. The event is also "public" on the "Anna Morvern" Facebook page.

Why another fundraiser so soon? Survivors With Biros has made a big funding application in partnership with Sligo Rape Crisis and Sexual Abuse Counselling Centre for 2 x 8 weeks of writing workshops and presentation of work at key policy events in collaboration with Survivors Side by Side and poet/spoken word artist, Sorcha Fox. However, funders require we demonstrate our own fundraising efforts/ match funding before they will fund so, whilst smaller, these fundraisers are crucial and every cent is appreciated. Thank you!

It has been a personal honour and a professional privilege to write with a small group of survivors over the past week, in the run-up to Poetry Day Ireland tomorrow.

Survivors learnt about expressive writing: writing from the personal, the emotional, from the body, mind and spirit, from experiences and memories, from all that is held within, in your own voice.

Many men and women across Ireland have suffered childhood sexual abuse and rape, and each individual has a unique story of survival. Their voices should be heard.

A number of pieces of writing have been produced for publication. They give an insight into what it is like to be an adult survivor of childhood sexual abuse and rape. You can read them at Survivors With Biros: Our Stories.

Thank you so much for supporting this worthwhile project which will now hopefully go from strength-to-strength and become more sustainable for the future.

In addition to thanking everyone who has donated money, I would also like to thank DataLex Consultancy for giving me an invaluable free advice session on relevant website security, data protection and privacy law.

Survivors With Biros workshops start next week and I am delighted to let you all know that my fundraising target has been reached and exceeded, taking into account offline donations.

This week, Sligo County Council has generously made a donation to cover all of the first year's website hosting costs and domain name registration.

The fact that the fundraising target has been exceeded is a wonderful and much-appreciated indicator of faith in this expressive writing project with survivors of child sexual abuse and rape. It means that Survivors With Biros will have increased sustainability.

Thank you all so much!
