Help Save Nadia and 50 over Children from Drugs & Poverty

Suriana serves a ghetto called Desa Mentari where six out of ten adult males are unemployed and the drug trade is rife. This is where you will find our Play & Learn Center which is a world away from the harmful world outside. The children are taught English, Maths, Malay, Arts & Crafts and at times, even Zumba! Our Play & Learn Center is also a childcare center where the parents can entrust their children to us free of charge and our volunteers will not leave the center until the last child is picked up by his or her parent.

We also serve disabled children and provide single mothers with various means of making a living at home so that they can take care of their children at the same time. Currently our overheads are about $12,000 per month and we need your help to pay for our bills. Without your contribution we will struggle to make ends meet and somethings will have to give. Our hope is that we will be able to maintain our services for the the children of Desa Mentari who are terribly in need of it.

More About Desa Mentari

Desa Metari is a low-cost housing area with 30,000 residents where most are earning less than USD 300 per month. Rubbish is strewn everywhere and the stench permeates the air. Many unemployed men hang out at coffee shops the entire day, setting a bad example for the children. Drugs are dealt in the open and sometimes the remnants and paraphernalia can be found on the ground, endangering the lives of ever-curious children. It is not unusual to find adults high on drugs and alcohol wandering about in the day time.

Hence the need for a safe space for children and our Play & Learn Center fulfills this need and more.

Suriana Welfare Society Malaysia is a registered Non-Government Organization with tax exemption status. We have a team of board members, staff and volunteers who work tirelessly to protect the rights of children.

Suriana is headed by James Nayagam who have spent 35 years working with poor families and abused children. James was the Commissioner of Human Rights in Malaysia and has a Master's degree and a diploma in Counselling Psychology.

The Suriana team needs your help in funding our overheads. Every little bit counts. As child diarist Anne Frank wrote "No one has ever become poor by giving".
