This grassroots project, called 'CHILDREN OF ROHINGYA' started last year in October when we realised that the refugee children currently living in Langkawi Island are not getting any proper education.

Most of them still do not speak, read or write proper English, Malay. and Math As the first generation refugee children born in Langkawi, the local languages are vital for their future here.

Rohingyas, an ethnic Muslim minorities living primarily in Myanmar’s Rakhine State, according to the UNHCR data, about 45,000 refugee children do not have access to formal education or health care programs in Malaysia.

During my time here, it felt like this minority community was left behind or forgotten. A total of about 250 families who fled Myanmar due to the crisis there, live in Langkawi Island now and the learning centre currently has 35 amazing Rohingya children from the ages of 5 to 12 years old.

They also do not spend time with the locals in fear of the authorities. Some are not registered or just the fear of being discriminated. So the learning centre is also their safe space for the Rohingya community to feel protected and supported.

Starting a refugee learning centre, on a grassroots level isn't always easy, it comes with its own challenges, so we truly appreciate your support to give these children the best environment for an education. A basic human right.

Where the funds will be used in coming months:

  1. Monthly rent
  2. Buying or printing work books.
  3. Kids furniture and basic furniture.
  4. New uniforms, slippers or shoes.
  5. Teaching equipments.
  6. A running kitchen.
  7. Teachers, driver and volunteer monthly fees.
  8. Monthly field trips, van rental cost.
  9. Community support.

One of the oldest kids, Rashid, we spoke about about surfing or skating, which are two popular island sports for his age group. His answer truly surprised me, as he has never heard of it, he does not even know what surfing or skating means. So we hope to take them out on field trips someday too.

THEY SHINE, WHEN WE EMPOWER.

This can only happen with your support, as the paper currency converts to a bigger purpose when used to empower marginalised communities and children.

Dear All, Firstly thank you with all my heart for your donations, as we could have not done this without your support. This is a community based project, and only with your kindness we are able to keep going. We now have about 4 to 5 volunteers who help out. . . . .

  • This school is so important for the Rohingha families: like all children they need basic education and social skills to feel safe, welcome and integrated into life in Langkawi. But as refugees, they cannot access state education here in Malaysia.. I'm helping them feel welcome by giving me my support . Do join me 🙂🤎🤲
