Support me to become a delegate of AUIMUN

I am a senior student from Jeju National University High School, South Korea. My dream is to become an international movie director. My ultimate goal as a director is to stand on behalf of the people who are suffering from all kinds of dangers and discrimination in the world. To reach my goal, I realized that I need an upright perception of our globalized world. For that reason, I have worked hard to contribute and solve social issues in South Korea since I was young.

My biggest interest lies in women’s right issues. In South Korea, the problem of Japanese military sexual slavery still exist. To those who don’t know, during the Japanese colonial era, the Japanese military raped and killed thousands of Korean teenage girls. These teenage girls were forced to have sexual intercourse with Japanese soldiers for more than 30 times a day. Not only was sexual abuse prevalent, but also physical violence. It is estimated that there were approximately 200,000 victims at that time. Because of the conservative national sentiment of Korea and it's fear of Japan’s revenge, most of the victims hid the truth for decades. Still, Japan won't admit their own crimes and rather, they insist that those girls had the responsibility to protect themselves. Now, only 24 of them are alive in South Korea. Their average age is 90. Victims are passing away before getting sincere apologies, recognition and healing.

I was 12 when I met Lee Yong Soo, a victim and survivor of the Japanese colonial era. I could never forget the trauma I went experienced after hearing whole story from her and decided to do my best to create awareness and obtain international attention on the matter. I joined in the peace demonstrations which were held in front of the Japanese consulate, raised money, and use social media to spread information and create awareness. Recently, another victim passed away. I knew her from the demonstration, so I gave a speech as a representative student in her memorial alter.

My activities

① 2018 Student Diplomat

Last year, I was nominated as the Jeju student diplomat. The Jeju official Education center selected students who can speak a foreign language fluently and, students who have a sense of volunteering and have potential to become future global leaders. Our main role was to hold the Jeju Youth International Forum with UNITAR where 170 students from 11 different countries participated. I worked in the debate committee. My main role was to host and educate the audience before the presentation of each panel. Also, I usually did translating and helped the participants. The satisfaction rate was over 90%, which means the forum was very successful.

② Korea’s Unification speech contest – Chairman award
Unification of North and South Korea has always been considered public concern in our country. Nearly half of the population prefer reconciliation whilst some disagree and have no interest in it. As an activist, I always thought about how I could persuade people who oppose unity. In the speech competition, I emphasized the struggle that women and children in North Korea are experience. Unlike South Korea, North Korea has a high rate of famine and infant mortality. Moreover, people who tried to escape are in serious danger of being arrested. I focused on the contrast between North and South Korea in order to alter South Korean’s perception on what they are taking for granted. This topic was what I had always wanted to have a full understand of and discuss. It is one of the reasons I obtained a high score on fluency and logic which resulted in me being awarded the Chairman's award.

As I mentioned earlier, I did lots of activities in order to create awareness of this tragedy. However, there are still lots of obstacles which hinder progress in our society. Once, I was at a national park doing a campaign asking people to sign a petition to make Japan account for their previous crimes. Suddenly, one old lady came to me and asked “Do you really think that you can solve this problem? you are just a little girl” At that time, I felt embarrassed and disappointed. So I couldn't replied to her.
I still don't know how to reply that question. “Can I really change the world? I’m still student. What if she was right? What if there’re nothing I can do to solve this problem?” All of these thoughts have never left my mind.
Now it’s time to answer. Through Asia International Youth Model United Nation, discussing the agenda of ‘human security’,sharing ideas with youths from all around the world and becoming a delegate of AIUMUN, I believe that I can and I will.

With this document, I appeal to every person reading this to make a donation and help me achieve my dream. To be part of the AIUMUN, I have to pay USD 399 which I don’t have. I can only afford the flight tickets.In AUIMUN, there are a lot of things I want to do and I believe that I can make a difference. Most importantly, I want to be party of UN-WOMEN and I want to let people know about of the urgency of solving the Japanese military sexual slavery.
