On March 24, 2022, it has been a month since the russian federation began its full-scale invasion of Ukraine. One month as we defeat the enemy.

Chernihiv region is the only region in Ukraine bordering both russia and belarus. That's why we face attacks on both sides simultaneously.

Chernihiv has bravely and confidently held the defense since the first day of the war and has not surrendered its positions, holding back the enemy's advance further into the country, including in the direction of Kyiv.

Unable to overcome the city's defenders, the enemy has been methodically destroying the city for a month, shelling it around the clock with grads (hails), tanks, and ballistic missiles, dropping bombs on infrastructure and residential buildings, and terrorizing the population.

On March 23, the russian occupiers dropped bombs on the road bridge over the Desna River, which connected the city to Kyiv and was almost the only way to bring in humanitarian aid and evacuate the population from the city.

Chernihiv is in a state of humanitarian crisis. The entire city is cut off from electricity, water, and heating because the infrastructure is being bombed every day, and there is no time or chance to fix it. Hospitals without light are unable to help the wounded and sick and save lives. The population is critically short of water, food, and medicine. People are freezing and falling ill sitting in damp basements, hiding from shelling and bombs.

The volunteers remaining in the city provide extraordinary support to the city with their incredible efforts despite the threatening situation. They work heroically, without signs of fatigue, to support the needs of the military and the territorial defense forces, hospitals, help evacuate people, provide the population with everything they need, look after the elderly and the sick and mothers with children. They travel across the country mainly to the west, where they receive humanitarian aid from Europe.

PROGRESS

This month, volunteers in Chernihiv united in a volunteer organization called Palyanytsia. These are the main areas of their activities and achievements:

✅ We feed 4,000 citizens daily

✅ We constantly deliver medicine and supplies to hospitals

✅ We provide the disabled, the elderly, and those in bomb shelters with everything they need

✅ We deliver medicines to volunteer pharmacies that people receive for free

✅ We bought a minivan that has already evacuated more than 70 citizens

✅ One of the primary areas of our work is organizing the delivery of humanitarian supplies. With our help, we delivered more than 40 tons of aid to Chernihiv

Palyanytsia has taken on the responsibility of helping the population.

CHALLENGES

At the moment, volunteers are facing the following challenges:

  1. About half of the population is left in the city, which is about 200,000 residents
  2. The situation is worsening in the region's residential areas, and people there also need help
  3. Chernihiv needs electric generators to enable the operation of hospitals and infrastructure facilities, provide people with communication (charging of smartphones). One generator costs USD 10,000.
  4. Food and medicine are needed to sustain the population
  5. Food and medicines are needed to sustain the military and territorial defense forces
  6. Transportation of humanitarian aid requires vehicles and fuel
