Hello! I am Abanoub Sedeky,a 26-year-old- research assistant at the Center for Material Science, Zewail City of Science and Technology-Egypt. Starting the upcoming spring 2021, I will be studying my master’s at Freiburg University, Master of Science Sustainable Materials - Polymer Sciences (http://www.physique-ingenierie.unistra.fr/im-polys/spip.php?page=rubrique&id_rubrique=2) , in Germany, which is rated one of the best polymer science programs related to my research interests in the world. But to be able to do that, I need your help to be able to raise enough funds to cover my expenses related to studying there…

My story started early in my childhood when my grandmother was diagnosed with acute myocardial infraction (AMI), one of the most fatal diseases around the world, I felt helpless and I realized that health is one of the most precious things in life.I used to spend my days thinking about the gap in life quality, and how these communities are still deprived of basic human needs like minimum health care and effective medications to cancer and heart disease patients.

I became very interested in how to cure people and in the capability of science and technology to offer customized solutions and medication that can save people’s lives and offer them a better life. Years later, I became very passionate about being part of the effort in ameliorating people’s lives.

During high school, my heart delved into the love of exploration, discovery and science and I developed a particular interest in those subjects that explore the human body. It was only then when I found out that I knew so little about how the human body interacts with its surroundings, how it catches diseases and how it fights against them.

To fulfill my passion, I started reading published articles, reviews and books about human body, how it is functioning, diseases mechanisms and how scientists are searching for effective medications for human diseases. Despite the huge amount of time I reserved for my self-study I didn’t spare an effort to be a top student throughout and till I ranked among the top of my class in high school which got me a chance to compete nationally against top students for a scholarship at the University of Science and Technology in Zewail City (USTZC), founded by the 1999 Noble Laurette Prof. Ahmed Zewail.

Study programs at the University of Science and Technology ensure having strong foundations in chemistry, physics, math, biology and computer science, regardless of the chosen course of study. I chose material science in order to go deeper and understand more about the science responsible for the varying properties of materials. Through my highly interdisciplinary study, I got quite a good deal of knowledge in Material Synthesis and Characterization, Polymers Science, Smart materials and Nano Materials.

The fact that I was a student of the first batch to be admitted and provided me with an unprecedented opportunity to get involved in research at the emerging research centers of Zewail City. I was particularly fascinated by polymer science and however a small change in the structure of a polymer can turn it into a drug delivery smart system or a bio-compatible scaffold for tissue engineering, This harmony between the changes in the molecular state and the final product can always lead to amazing results.

In my senior year, I fulfilled my childhood dream as I dedicated my graduation project to the source of my passion for science; a project based on the case study of one of my best friends. The aim of my graduation study was to develop new PIP-loaded optimized core-shell NPs to overcome poor drug solubility, enhance its permeability through BBB, and to improve its cytotoxic activity against human brain cancer. My project was selected to represent the University at the fourth International Conference on Advanced Sciences (ICAS4), Hurgda Egypt 2018 and awarded the gold medal for poster presentation. By the end of 2018 my first manuscript was published in the European journal of pharmaceutical sciences.

Beside my research work, I was also keen to engage in student activities and contribute to my community. I have worked on several projects in a teamwork setting where cooperation was a must, allowing me to gain the necessary team-work skills. I was member of the Hosting Committee in our university’s annual science festival. Furthermore, my participation in student activities as Member at IEEE Zewail City and founder of ZC Table Tennis team enriched my leadership skills.

During my undergraduate years, I have developed that kind of dedication, determination and resilience that would allow me to sustain a satisfactory academic stance throughout the M.Sc. program and forward on. With such qualities and along with sincere passion, I am looking forward to continue in the academic track as a teacher and a researcher and become not only an independent and competent researcher and a professor but also to be a role model for all young scientists.

Despite the fact that the tuition fees of Freiburg University for the master I chose are covered, the living costs in Germany are pretty high for me, moreover the enrollment fees for the University. I will continue to do my best to work every summer but not just that I will also try to get a job during my study time and I estimate that I could cover almost a half of my expenses, but, unfortunately, it is not enough. This is why I am asking for your help.
