Sophia Refugee Support Group (SRSG)

We are Sophia Refugee Support Group (SRSG), a student-led volunteer circle made up of Sophia University students in Tokyo, Japan. Our group was founded in 2017 and our vision is to be the bridge between the Japanese society and the refugee community.

According to the data provided from Immigration bureau, among 19628 people who applied for refugee status in Japan, only 20 people were accepted in 2017 (Ministry of Justice, 2018). In 2019, 44 people were granted the refugee status out of 10375 applicants (Mistry of Justice, 2020). It may appear that the number of people accepted as refugees has improved, but the increase was only by 0.003 percent.

Our main activities are refugee events where we interact with refugees in a fun environment, detention center visits to the Shinagawa Detention Center about 4-5 times a week, English to Japanese translations to assist in the refugee application, Japanese language classes to help refugees integrate into the Japanese society, workshops to bring awareness about the refugee situation to the Japanese public and fundraising events. We have collaborated with organizations such as the UNHCR, Amnesty International and Japan Association for Refugees (JAR) in the past. We also had the honor to be featured in The Japan Times. The funds raised will go towards purchasing supplies to donate to the detention centre such as phone call cards, textbooks, and hygiene products among others. It will also be utilized for medical support of the asylum seekers. In addition, it will help in organizing events which aim to shed light on the refugee situation in Japan.

Due to the COVID-19 outbreak, we are currently unable to continue with our usual activities However, we are still active and intend to stay connected with the refugees and asylum seekers in Japan through food deliveries and letter sending activities. Moreover, we continue to spread awareness about the refugee situation through online. Refugees and asylum seekers are arguably among the most vulnerable populations in this time of the coronavirus pandemic. They are unable to find jobs, receive no health insurance, and the support groups that assist them have temporarily shut down. Hence, we would like to raise money in order to continue on giving support to refugees, specifically for our food deliveries, which we have begun to do and are planning to continue on doing twice a month.

Our group is currently unable to have other means of fundraising as physical classes and activities in our university has been suspended to adhere to social distancing and to mitigate the spread of Coronavirus. We understand that the world is currently in a difficult situation, but we think that this situation is even worse for refugees and asylum seekers.

We appreciate any amount of money to help our refugee friends overcome this pandemic. Please stay safe!

こんにちは！

私たちは上智大学のボランティアサークルのソフィア難民支援サークル（SRSG)です。2017年に創立されたSRSGは、日本社会と日本の難民コミュニティの架け橋となることをヴィジョンとして掲げ、活動しています。

法務省入国管理局のデータによると、2017年には19628人のうち難民というステータスを取得できたのはたったの20人でした。また、2019年には10375人中難民認定者数は44人と、2017年に比べ随分良くなったように思われますが、僅か0.003パーセントの増加でしかなく、まだまだ改善の余地がありそうです。

主な活動として、難民の方々と和気あいあいと交流するイベントの開催、東京出入国在留管理局（港区）にある収容所の訪問（週４、５回）、難民申請資料の翻訳、そして、日本社会により馴染めるように日本語のクラスを開催したり、財政面のサポートをするために、募金活動を行っています。機会があれば、国内の高校に訪問し、日本の難民情勢を伝えています。これまで、国連難民高等弁務官事務所 (UNHCR), アムネスティ日本（Amnesty International), 日本難民支援協会（JAR)と共同で活動する機会もありました。更には、ジャパンタイムズ(The Japan Times)にもSRSGを取り上げて頂きました。(https://www.japantimes.co.jp/community/2019/08/14/...)

全ての支援金は日本の難民の現状の認識を高めるイベントや収容所訪問時の必需品（教科書、衛生用品等）、医療面の援助、そして鎌倉にある難民の家の維持費として使わせて頂きます。

私たちSRSGが、日本社会との共生を目指し、日本にいる難民のコミュニティーにポジティブな影響をもたらすための力になって頂けると幸いです。

[お知らせ！]

コロナウイルスの影響により、現在私たしSRSGは普段の活動を中止しておりますが、手紙やインターネットを通じた難民の方々との交流を取ろうと努力しています。先日、メンバーたちは、今なかなか手に入らないマスクを手作りし、難民の方々に送りました。また、日本最大のフードバンク、セカンドハーベストジャパンの援助を介して、食料品を30箱それぞれの難民のご自宅に配送しました。私たちのインスタグラム（@sophia.srsg)またはツイッター (@sophia_srsg) に最近の活動をアップしているのでをチェックしてみてください！

この国で社会的弱者である難民の方々たちは、私たちの多くよりも社会的サポートが通常よりも欠如しているために、毎日毎日を生き抜くので大変な生活をされています。働くこともできす、健康保険等の支援も受けられず、普段彼らをサポートしていた団体も、コロナウイルスの影響により活動を一時中断しています。このように、特に難しい生活を送られている難民の方々に私たちは、必需品の提供や最低でも月二回の食料配布を続けたいと思っております。コロナウイルスによって全ての人が苦労されているかと思いますが、この募金活動に協力して頂いて、より皆でこの厳しい時期を乗り越えることができれば良いなと思っています。
