Hello! My goal is to produce this device to anyone on the planet without a clean source of water and having a scarcity. The device will use sunlight for soaking up water vapour from air so it can produce nearly 3 liters of water per day for every kilogram of sponge like absorber it contains. Even in low humidity, it is possible. The water harvester will be made of family crystalline powders called metal organic frameworks, or MOFs in short. By choosing different metals and organics, chemists can dial in the properties of each MOF, controlling what gases bind to them, and how strongly they hold on. To be more specific, the system will consist of a kilogram of dust-sized MOF crystals pressed into a thin sheet of porous copper metal. That sheet is placed between a solar absorber and a condenser plate and positioned inside a chamber. At night, the chamber is opened to allow the ambient air diffuse through the porous MOF and water molecules to stick to its interior surfaces, gathering in groups of eight to form tiny cubic droplets. In the morning, the chamber is closed to allow sunlight the entrance to a window on top of the device to heat up the MOF so it can liberate the water droplets and drive them—as vapour—toward the cooler condenser. The temperature difference, as well as the high humidity inside the chamber, causes the vapour to condense as liquid water so it will eventually drop into a collector.
