Who are we?

We are Friends of Kenya Malta, a Maltese NGO, started by Dr Ivana Legname, a sign language interpreter. Check our Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/friendsofkenyamalta

What do we do?

Primarily, we help deaf children from Kenya to access the sign language, so they can become independent. With time, we managed to help also other children within the Kenyan community. Thanks to this straightforward approach, Friends of Kenya Malta is attracting more and more volunteers, eager to make a difference.

What we have accomplished?

We have paid a one-year membership for two special schools for deaf children. You must know that being deaf in Africa is considered a curse, a sign of possession from the devil, due to the local superstitions. A deaf child is normally barred from social life, let alone from education. Friends of Kenya Malta punched a hole into this misconception, giving these children the chance to have the same rights as the other children. Deafness is also a disability which too often is overlooked for a long time. It hardly starts compassion, because you can't see it until you want to communicate.

But Friends of Kenya Malta did more. We have already started the construction of a school building that will host all the children of the nearby villages. Kenyan children are used to study in cabins that are rebuilt from scratch every year, after the storm season. Providing them with a school made of solid stone walls with a proper roof, means to provide more than a mere education facility. It means providing a shelter, a place where they can feel safe.

However, these efforts would be meaningless if these children didn't have access to the most precious good: Water!

Friends of Kenya Malta therefore already built a well, from which the locals can attain drinkable water without having to cover miles every day, most of the times on foot.

What we still need to do?

So far, with the generosity of the Maltese people, we have collected an amazing array of clothing and stationery that will fill the school we are building. We have collected enough clothes to dress every child and even most of their parents! The empathy shown was overwhelming. There is only one step more left to fulfil the goal of this project. We need 3500 EUR to pay the shipping fee of the goods. We have over 500 boxes to deliver and unfortunately, this service is not cheap. But with your precious help, we can overcome this last obstacle and deliver to those children, the cargo we have collected and promised them. Thank you in advance for your generous offer! Even the smallest donation can make the biggest difference!
