Named as the World’s Best Destination in 2017 by Trip Advisor Travelers’ Choice Award (1), Bali is one of the only islands in Indonesia where 70 per cent of people’s lives depend on tourism, both directly and indirectly, Bagus Sudibya, chief adviser of the Association of the Indonesian Tours & Travel Agencies Bali, stated (2).

As the COVID-19 hit the world, Bali is no different. With the occupancy rate conditions in Bali are now almost reaching 0%, the hotels are increasing efficiency aggressively, mainly by cutting off the employee costs (3). Thus, the fate of thousands of tourism workers, and their family, is at stake.

However, there is another group of freelance/daily workers, who usually relied on tourism as well, who will get severely affected by this situation. Not only they didn’t have fixed income in the past times, but they also generally rely on the generosity of the customers to gain additional income.

Ayu, Wayan, Suwarti, and Ketut, were a few of freelance massage therapists, laundry hotel staffs, cleaning service workers; who lost their income as the tourists have stopped coming to Bali. In March 2020, they barely made IDR 1,000,000 (USD 60) as there are less people using their service.

They represent Indonesian women who have been supporting the family household for years, or even become the main breadwinners, and now they don’t know how to feed their children during this pandemic and after.

If you have ever experienced the warm hospitality of the people in Bali, which makes you want to come back over and over again, it’s the right time to #SaveBali, one family at a time.
