Save Baby Andrei From Biliary Atresia

Andrei Frances, name inspired from St. Padre Pio (Francesco Forgione), is now a young warrior. Exactly on his third month, my nephew was diagnosed with Biliary Atresia, a rare liver disease that will only require liver transplant to be able to survive. I created this page to help my nephew survive and be able to raise funds as quick as we can because we only have less than 7 months from now to extend his life. As per initial information from consultations, the procedure is expected to not go lower than 2 million pesos (if done in India) up to 4-5 million pesos (Taiwan or Philippines), not yet including the maintenance medications after the procedure. Any form of help to meet our target will be of great help for a young family with four other young children to take care of.

Andrei is still looking very healthy according to the doctor which we are hoping to be a very good indicator of his survival. He responds well just like a normal baby yet very innocent of the battle ahead of him.

What Is Biliary Atresia?

Biliary atresia is a disease of the bile ducts that affects only infants. Bile is a digestive liquid that is made in the liver. It travels through the bile ducts to the small intestine, where it helps digest fats.

In biliary atresia, the bile ducts become inflamed and blocked soon after birth. This causes bile to remain in the liver, where it starts to destroy liver cells rapidly and cause cirrhosis, or scarring of the liver.

As the liver becomes scarred, it presses against the walls of the veins. This constricts the veins and blood cannot pass through them properly. The result is portal hypertension (high blood pressure in the portal vein).

Scientists do know that biliary atresia is not hereditary; parents do not pass it on to their child. It is also not contagious, and it is not preventable. It is also not caused by anything an expectant mother did or did not do.
