Richard Volk is a promising, hard working, 11-year-old ice hockey player and - most important of all - my son. He first took to ice at the beginning of November 2015. Within a time span of 2 and half years - by combination of hard & diligent training in his home team of HK SKP Poprad (where former NHL & Washington Capital's star Peter Bondra was raised) and various off-site specialized training activities - he was able to match his teammates (most of them playing ice hockey for 6 years) and opponents within Slovakia's boy's ice hockey league in skating and stick handling skills resulting in 34 points in 16 games played whilst once being honored with Most valuable player of the game award.
So far we were concentrating on developing Richard's skills and competing with teams and players within the traveling distance of our home town playing various tournaments within the area of Slovakia & Czech Republic. Sometimes we were winning, sometimes we were losing, but most of all Richard was honing his ice hockey skills.
Now we have come to the point when we understand we need to move further to give Richard a chance to develop more and face new, tougher competition. Richard has received an amazing opportunity to participate in a 6 week-long program of 2-shift on ice, 2-shift off ice/day training, 3 AAA tournaments, everyday school education and first hand experience to live in a family in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. It's an opportunity that is hard to pass up and one Richard has been dreaming about, but did not hope it will come so soon.
The fact that this opportunity has come about so quickly leads me to post our story here. So far - me, my wife and whole family - were financing Richard's training and tournament participation. Our approach & aim is to always take care of our issues and aspirations on our own and not bother other people with them. However, budget requirements of EUR 3500 for this opportunity is pretty steep to manage at once within such a short time frame. Therefore I have to swallow my pride and reach out to good people around us. I have approached friends & family and I have also decided to approach and ask for your help.
