Realizing Grubin: combating the devastating health effects of waste with black soldier fly larvae

Have you ever heard of these flies? Flies that live around us, with us?

Well, now you have. And you won’t forget about them, because they’re amazing.

They decompose waste up to 100 times faster than conventional composting, and output a product 60 times more profitable.

We harness the decomposition power of black soldier fly (BSF) in our larvae-producing bins, Grubins.

We democratize the flies energy by distributing our Grubins to the locals, reducing waste from the street, thereby reducing life-threatening disease. The fly’s larvae financial value allows us to distribute our Grubins as part of a profitable business that enables our service to be scalable, to quickly transform the public health of the locals.

We are four crazy sophomore and junior students from the University of Tokyo, majoring in Medicine, Law and Engineering.

During numerous visits to Cambodia, we were continually shocked by the organic waste littering the streets. By the stench drifting across the city. By the children playing next to the mounds of rotting waste.

But the shock wasn’t just superficial sympathy. It was a shock that drove us, that teared us apart because deep down, we knew we could do something about it.

A chance encounter with the Hult Prize, the world’s largest social entrepreneurship competition allowed us to brainstorm ideas, to build up a plan, to come up with a solution.

We pitched in front of hundreds of people. From the Shanghai Regionals to the Wildcard Round, the Japan Finals. But in each of these events we didn’t make it, being placed in the Top 6 (out of 45 teams), the Top 15 (out of 80,000 participants) and 2nd (out of 30 teams).

But never did we think we had lost. Encouraged by those around us, we believed in our solution and driven by our passion we continued to brush up our plan.

We took our Grubins to Cambodia. We met shop owners like Sath who told us, pointing his finger at the pile of waste “The smell, the rats. At least around me, I want to do something about it”. We met Kung, a homeless Tuk Tuk driver in need of a stable income. And Taing, an aquaculture farmer of over 30 ponds unsatisfied with the soaring fish meal prices.

After collaborating with specialist professors, leading industry experts and social entrepreneurs, before we knew it, our plan had become a business, our team a startup.

And although the Hult Prize has ended, our quest has definitely not. From the end of this month we will be based in Cambodia to conduct pilot studies, to fulfill our promise, to try to make our vision a reality.

And we need your help. Really, we do.

We will use local material to reproduce the Grubin prototypes we have built in Japan, and to grow BSF larvae in Cambodia. We will undertake a whole cycle; we will work with locals like Sath who will host our Grubins, with Tuk Tuk drivers like Kung. We will produce BSF larvae which we will turn into fish meal using extracting and powdering machines. And we will surprise Taing by supplying him with his first batch of BSF fish meal.

We need funding to cover the material costs, transport costs and living costs.

Specifically:

Infrastructure costs: 350,000 yen

Grubin Production costs: 250,000 yen

Transport costs: 400,000 yen

Living costs: 200,000 yen

In return, we will update you every single day with our progress and give you our BSF fish meal when it is successfully made.

2人は医学部同期の親友。

工学部の仲間はネットで探した。

法学部の仲間は友達の紹介で。

初めは全くの初対面だった。

でも、今では、1人でも欠けたらやっていけない。

そんなチームに。

そして、毎回ショックを受けた。

路上に放置されたゴミの山。

そこからくる臭い。

そんなゴミ山の真横で遊ぶ子供達。

何か出来ることはないのか。

探し、探し、探した。

そして見つけた。

世界最大の学生起業コンテスト、Hult Prize。

Hult Prizeへのチャレンジを通して、我々のアイデアは作られ、洗練された。

のべ何百人もの前で、何十回もピッチした。

東京で、大阪で、上海で。

そして、何回も負けた。

上海では、45チーム中、トップ6。

上位10名が勝ち上がる敗者復活戦では、8万人もの応募の中でトップ15。

最後のチャンス、日本大会では、2位。

常にギリギリのところで負け、そして成長した。

上海で負けた後、我々はGrubinを手にカンボジアへ飛んだ。

色んな人に話を聞き、フィードバックを貰った。

ある店のオーナー、Sathはこう言った。

「どこに行っても、臭いとネズミ。この周りくらいは自分でなんとかしたいんだ。」

TukTukドライバーのKungは、ホームレスだった。

「ベトナムやインド。海外のTukTukか進出してきて仕事が減ってるんだ。安定した仕事が欲しい。」

Taingは養殖業者。

飼料の値段が急騰している現状に不満を抱いていた。

そして、Grubinが作る飼料はカンボジア産。

これに、いたく共感してくれた。

我々は、カンボジアへの再訪を約し、帰国。

多くの方の力をお借りし、Grubinの構造を洗練させ、アイデアもブラッシュアップした。

ミズアブの教授。

最大の競合企業のCEOにも話を聞いた。

多くの社会起業家にお会いした。

そして、我々のアイデアはビジネスとなり、

我々のチームはスタートアップへと変わっていった。
