Putting for a Purpose: From Parkinson’s to The Belfry!

Back in 2011, at the age of 31, I received a diagnosis that shook my world - Parkinson's disease. It was a moment that changed my life's trajectory, forcing me to confront challenges I never imagined.

I began my love affair with golf when I joined Mallow Golf Club at 10 years old. Each summer, me and my buddies would head to the club and spend most of our days just hitting balls. That was until I was old enough to earn a few pounds so I ended up working on the course each summer, raking bunkers etc

In 2004, I remember heading to the golf club and telling my mother that I was going to win the Captains Prize and sure enough that crystal trophy holds pride of place in my mothers house to this day.

Following two back operations in 2006/2007 I had to stop playing golf. It wasn't until after my Parkinson's Diagnosis I finally managed to get 'back' playing in 2012 when I joined Cobh Golf Club and managed to get my handicap down to 6.

As the years went on, my children took priority and my parkinson's worsened, golf had to take a back seat. I've navigated the twists and turns of this condition, facing moments of doubt, uncertainty and poor mental health.

In February 2022, there was a significant turning point on this journey - Deep Brain Stimulation. The surgery gave me hope and a chance at a better tomorrow.

Fast forward to today, and I'm thrilled to share that despite a few setbacks with my back again, I'm gearing up for an amazing opportunity - playing in the Sport Parkinson's Four Nations Golf Tournament at The Belfry this October. This event isn't just about golf; it's about camaraderie, community, and making a tangible impact.

Last year, the tournament raised an astounding £140,000. As it returns to The Belfry for the third time, I am filled with excitement and pride . As well as representing my country, all players are uniting to make a difference to the lives of others on the same journey.

Here's where you come in. Funds raised in excess of costs related to Team Ireland's participation in the tournament at the Belfry will be split between Sports Parkinson's and the Dublin Neurological Institute. These organisations are involved in research, support, and care for those living with Parkinson's and neurological conditions. The Dublin Neurological Institute has had a massive impact on my life. Deep Brain Stimulation has given me my life back and I would love to give something back to the team at DNI. Led by Professor Richard Walsh, they have been a fantastic support to me and my family.
