The Planning Authority has recently approved application PA/09771/19 for a massive car park in Triq Edgar Bernard, Gzira, so that University can relocate the parking around the ring road to make the campus-environment car free.

While the University of Malta creates a pleasant, pollution-free environment for its student and academic population, it will be shifting the car entrance to university away from Mater Dei and Triq Esperanto, to the quiet but densely populated residential area surrounding the university sports grounds.

The environmental impact will be devastating, with local residents having to endure the traffic and environmental impacts permanently.

The decision taken by the Planning Authority, with the connivance of the Gzira Mayor, is in breach of Article 72(2) of the Development Planning Act, 2016, and in breach of North Harbour Local Plan policies NHMP08 and NHMP09, which PROHIBIT the creation of new parking on university grounds, and instead encourages the shift towards more sustainable modes of transport.

This project also undermines the University's credibility as an institution of learning and research, and flies in the face of its purported principles of "fostering a culture of sustainability". Your donation will help raise funds to file an appeal against permit PA/09771/19.

Your generosity is greatly appreciated.

  • Entrance to and exit from the carpark should be through the University ring road not shifted to a residential area in front of other people's homes. This is very arrogant of the Univerisy authorities.

  • Serious planning and funding should be devoted to making infrastructure cycle friendly, rather than enticing young people to buy cars!

  • Car parks will soon obsolete as shared autonomous vehicles are replacing private cars well within the lifetime of new car parks.
