PROJEKT MADAGASKAR: INTRODUCTION
We are two students in Sweden, going to Madagascar to start a project, completely funded by ourselves on our spare time. Our goal? To raise awareness of the sustainability issues that the country is facing. We will be making a grassroot documentary by filming the incredible natural landscapes and animals of Madagascar, but we will also be working with and documenting the work of several charities/local projects and visit schools and care clinics. During this trip throughout the country we will meet people daily in rural areas, schools and towns.
Madagascar is a beautiful country that is very rich in nature and culture. However, the country remains one of the world’s poorest; 91 % of the population live on less than $2 a day [UNICEF, 2013]. Many of the poorest of the poor - are children. And now we will have a chance to actually help some of the families that are in most need. That is why we are collecting money that will ALL GO DIRECTLY to buying necessities for the children, that will be donated by us in person. We have been informed by local contacts that many children are lacking basic things that most of us take for granted...
ALL MONEY DONATED WILL BE USED TO BUY CHILDREN:
- Hygienic items (Soap, schampoo, toothbrushes, combs etc)
- Educational items (Pens/pencils, writing pads, books etc)
- Toys and playthings
- Clothing and blankets (shirts, socks etc)
We have also been made aware that there is a lack of resources in schools. If you would like to donate any old or used laptops or tablets, please send us a private message through this site, or send us a PM on our facebook page ProjektMadagaskar, to arrange something.
Even a small donation can make a massive difference! Help us to make children a bit happier and provide them with what they need. Our trip to Madagascar takes off June 6th, so please make your donation NOW.
** YOU CAN NOW ALSO SWISH YOUR DONATION (Sweden only)! SEND US A MESSAGE TO KNOW MORE. The donated money by SWISH will also be added to this fund. **
Kindest regards // Brett & Tina at Projekt Madagaskar, Sweden
MADAGASCAR: BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Madagascar is a large island off the east coast of Africa. Its isolated geographical location has allowed unique fauna and wildlife to develop; 95 % of its reptiles, 92 % of its mammals, and 89 % of its plant life are endemic to the country. Madagascar is also home to the third largest reef system on earth. However, Madagascar is currently dealing with grave threats to its natural resources. Madagascar is among the poorest countries in the world, listed as the poorest country not in conflict. Therefore, the various socioeconomic demands have led to over 90 % of Madagascar’s original forests being destroyed! This, twinned with the runoff from deforestation, over-fishing and the illegal wildlife trade, is gravely threatening the survival of Madagascar's native wildlife and reefs, and is also leaving few sustainable options for peoples livelihood in the rural areas. The situation is severe, and action needs to be taken NOW.
That is the reason behind why we want to learn more about Madagascar, raise awareness and highlight the possible alternatives to help protect the country in a sustainable matter. If you are interested in following our project and our journey, please check out our Facebook page "Projekt Madagaskar".
