Project “Throw away prejudices, catch a disc”

I am a student writing a master thesis on the topic "Social Inclusion of Roma Youth through ultimate frisbee". For those of you who hear about ultimate frisbee for the first time, it is a non-contact team sport played with a flying disc (frisbee) on the grass field. There are zones are located at both ends of the field. The aim of the game is to pass the disc across the field, in any direction, and catch the disc in the end zone.

The goal of the project "Throw away prejudices, catch a disc" is to introduce this sport to young Roma pupils and via this project promote social inclusion, gender equality, and awareness of the disadvantaged situation of the Roma minority. The project also serves as a means to interchange Roma and Slovak culture, provide a social meeting place for Roma and non-Roma youth, and offer young Roma people a meaningful free activity close to their homes.

The advantage is that ultimate frisbee is a low-cost sport. All you need is a disc, sports shoes or cleats and a grass field. That is why I would like to request funds for the purchase of minimum:

• 20 small size discs from kids (7 - 11 years old)
• 30 normal size discs for teenagers (12 years old and older)

First, I will use the flying discs (frisbees) at elementary school(s) in the vicinity of Košice during demonstrations of the sport 'ultimate frisbee', and later I will distribute them to children and youth at the main event. At the end of the year, a weekend tournament is planned, where children will have an opportunity to play with experienced frisbee players.

The more money collected, the more discs I will be able to order and give out to children :)

SLOVAK VERSION:

Som študentka, ktorá píše diplomovú prácu na tému "Sociálna inklúzia rómskej mládeže pomocou športu". Konkrétne sa jedná o šport ultimate frisbee. Ide o bezkontakný tímový šport, ktorý sa hrá s lietajúcim diskom (frisbee) na ihrisku. Na oboch koncoch ihriska sú umiestnené zóny. Cieľom hry je nahrávať si disk cez celé ihrisko a chytiť disk v zóne.

Unikátnosťou tohto športu je fakt, že sa hrá bez rozhodcov, a to aj na tej najvyššej úrovni, napr. na majstrovstvách sveta. V ultimate frisbee sa kladie veľký dôraz na dôležité hodnoty ako fairplay, dodržiavanie pravidiel, spoluprácu, disciplínu a rešpekt k súperovi. Zaujímavosťou je aj charakter športu ako takého. Je to jeden z mála športov, ktoré sa hrajú v mixovej divízií. To znamená, že dievčatá a chlapci hrajú spolu v tíme, pričom obe pohlavia sú rovnako cenené a uprednostňované. Preto verím, že hranie tohto športu môže pomôcť posilniť postavenie mladých rómov a rómiek v našej spoločnosti a prispieť k ich sociálnej inklúzií.

Výhodou je, že ultimate frisbee to nízkonákladový šport. Potrebujete k nemu disk, športové topánky alebo kopačky a nejakú väčšiu trávnatú plochu. Práve preto, by som v rámci tejto výzvy chcela požiadať o finančné prostriedky na kúpu minimálne:

• 20 ks diskov pre deti od 7 do 11 rokov
• 30 ks diskov pre mládež nad 12 rokov

Nákupené lietajúce disky (frisbee) najprv využijem na základných školach v okolí Košíc počas úkážok športu 'ultimate frisbee' a neskôr ich rozdám deťom a mládeži v súťažiach na hlavnom podujatí. Na konci roka sa chystá víkendový turnaj, na ktorom si budú môcť deti zahrať v tíme so skúsenými frisbee hráčmi.

Čím viac peňazí sa vyzbiera, tým viac diskov budem môcť objednať a rozdať deťom :)
