Hello, we are BIOECOVANILLA, a group of people who seek to save the largest population in Costa Rica of the Vanilla karen-christianae species which is about to be lost.

This beautiful and valuable species was discovered by our leader Patricia Lehmann Calderón, the primary person in wanting to conserve and save the native populations of this species, which are at high risk of being lost due to the accelerated reduction and destruction of their habitat, due to because the area where they are growing there is no conservation area nearby and it is under a lot of pressure due to the advance of urban development, as is the moment thanks to the construction of the new mega border customs between Costa Rica and Panama, which construction begins in October, 2021.

Vanilla Plum. ex Mill. is of great importance in the cosmetic, pharmaceutical, perfumery and food industries (Azofeifa et al., 2014; Lehmann, 2021). Therefore, the species of this genus in their natural state are in severe danger of extinction (Soto-Arenas, 2006; Lehmann, 2021); mainly due to deforestation, land tenure, agriculture and human development (Bory et al., 2008; Lehmann, 2021). Several of these species have suffered a lot of pressure worldwide because they are important for obtaining natural vanillin in the food industry, which has led to poor management and a decrease in their genetic variability, affecting genes of agroecological importance (Azofeifa et al., 2014; Lehmann, 2021).

Due to the urgency of the case we try to become an association as quickly as possible, however we do not have enough funds to pay the lawyer who will help us with the process of becoming a legal entity to begin with the objectives that we set in the "Strategic planning for the conservation of Vanilla karen-christianae in the canton of Corredores" and request all permits for the rescue and transfer of this population to a municipal forest in Corredores where it has the best chances to survive.

As an objective we also have to promote the conservation and sustainable management of this vanilla species, its habitat and associated biodiversity, in the canton of Corredores in Costa Rica; likewise, develop and promote ex situ and in situ conservation processes; promote the empowerment and participation of local and indigenous communities. Therefore, through all this, BIOECOVANILLA also intends to seek the cooperation of non-governmental organizations and national and foreign institutions, and it is desired that V. karen-christianae be taken into account so that it is the flag species that can represent the biodiversity of the canton of Corredores and be part of its municipal symbols, and that it is an umbrella species to achieve through it conserve all the biodiversity of the southern zone of Costa Rica.
