Hello, our precious 6 months old boy Spartacus was born with a critical / severe cardiology condition. He is diagnosed with tricuspid valve dysplasia, and the right ventricle seems to be also hypertrophied. The condition is severe as the right ventricle and right atrium are already much dilated but the vet would not exclude that Spartacus could also have a pulmonic stenosis which is a typical congenital cardiac disease in French Bulldogs.

Since the tests carried out here in Malta are limited, Spartacus needs to travel to Novara, Milan – Italy. During a Skype call with one of the top Veterinary Cardiologist in Italy would like to examine Spartacus more thoroughly by performing tests that include Cardiac CT scan and Transeosophagal Echocardiogram). Based on these tests it will be decided whether more tests are required and if he is eligible for surgery.

The tests cost around 2,000 euros, not to mention our flights, accommodation, transport, etc. Spartacus need these tests ASAP, and we would appreciate any assistance in such a short amount of time. The appointment has been already set for the 20th of August.

If the diagnosis is confirmed to be Pulmonic Valve Stenosis, surgery can be carried out during our visit in Novarra by a procedure called balloon valvuloplasty. Such operation cost around 3,000 euros. If the operation is successful, Spartacus should live a normal life, except annual visit to our local veterinarian for an echocardiogram.

On the other hand, if Spartacus is diagnosed with Tricuspid Valve Dysplasia, the only option that exists is an open heart surgery with extracorporeal ventilation. The surgery itself costs around 15,000 - 20,000 euro.

According to the Italian Veterinarian, it is important not to lose time considering the young age of our dog in order to minimise any damage on the heart tissue. We are doing everything in our power for our small dog. Starting a fundraiser, and ask family, friends and animal lovers (and counting on their kindness) to assist us in helping our Spartacus in receiving the required treatment.

If needs be, medical reports, images, and estimate of costs for the cardiac workup are available.

Every Euro and share of this appeal counts. If the sum is reached, and funds are not spent on Spartacus procedures, funds will be donated to animal sanctuaries.

After these necessary tests, which will cost around €2,000, surgery, most probably, is needed. The basic surgery will cost an extra €3,000 however, the worst case scenario is the open heart surgery of €15-€20k. .

Please keep on donating even if the maximum amount is reached.

Please give Spartacus a second chance in life.

Many thanks in advance.

Milan visit

Update posted by Nigel Bruno at 01:38 pm

Just a quick update on Spartacus, our 7 month old puppy.First and foremost many thanks for your donation. Basically we went to Milan and Spartacus was seen by a team of Cardiologists, who had done all tests including ECG, CT scan, Transesophageal Echocardiography, bloods, etc. The prognosis is more severe. . . . .
